Ah, this thread brings back memories. I had an attic bedroom at the top of the house as a youngster in the 1970s, the kind with stairs but no door. The only contained space was the small alcove between the bedroom and the window. I blacked out the window and light proofed the other end with a heavy curtain. There was sufficient room for an old ironing board to hold four 10 x 8" trays and an enlarger propped on something solid, memory has failed on what that thing was.
The enlarger was an Axomat and I walked on air carrying it home from the photography shop. I only emerged for meal times and put my late onset asthma down to being too exhausted to empty the trays as I slept in the same room as the chemistry. I wouldn't have missed the experience for the world. Scanning old negatives recently I came across a view from that bedroom window. The house, the other people in it, the streets themselves, no longer exist.
