Time and dilution for Ilford pq universal with ilford hp5 film

Have you read what Ilford says about using PQ in its tech sheets on PQ? It is not recommended for anything other than sheet film. If that is what you are using then OK:


The technical sheets go to say to give times for HP5 as follows

HP5 at EI 320 = 4 mins 30 secs for what it calls pictorial contrast Developer is used 1+19

For what it calls high contrast developer is 1+9 and times are given 4-8 mins for speeds from 400-800

Many years ago I used PQ Universal to batch process B&W film commercially in a hand line.
It was 1+19 tank solution, timed 4 min for all film and replenished.

It did make 35mm look a bit grainy but in commercial 6x4 inch (10x15cm) prints it didn't really matter.

@Ian Grant has a lot of experience and knowledge of using PQ Universal for films.

Yes, we all hope you like grain, and a lot of it.

I used this combo in the 1980s when it was (briefly) popular with fast-shooters who liked what we then called the Ralph Gibson look. High contrast, heaps of grain.

In my case, I made the big mistake of going to Bali with a Canon rangefinder, and20 rolls of HP5 - I photographed everything with it and then processed the lot in a couple of batches, using PQU. None of my negatives printed well above 4x5", the grain was so obvious.

But if grain is your thing, well. Enjoy!!
