A caution. Most of the examples in his books use papers that no longer exist and prepared toners that no longer exist, still a wonderful book. Kodak printed a beautiful book on Quality printing in black and white that is quite available.

Many materials are sadly gone but as the book (I have a copy from the first edition, but dedicated to yours truly and not for sale) carries recipes for making most from scratch, it's still a treasure trove for anyone interested in chemical toning.

I recently purchased three of Tim Rudman’s books on lith printing and toning.

The Master Photographer’s Lith Printing Course. Purchased from Thirftbooks.

The World of Lith Printing. Purchased from Thirftbooks.

The Master Photographer’s Toning Book. Purchased from Ebay

They were not cheap.

They contain an incredible amount of research and information.

The images in The Master Photographer’s Toning Book are stunning.

I am close to finishing my first darkroom and am looking forward to trying my hand at lith printing and toning.

Nothing revolutionary in these books. The Grail it's not. Great books, hundreds of beautiful photos.

Get in the darkroom with some warmtone fiber base paper. Toners etc.

I'm regularly dipping into all of Tim's books that I own, as they just have so much information in them. Yes, some (a lot!) of the papers etc. mentioned no longer exist, but there is more to the books than just that.

Tim personally did a reprint of his book not that long ago and I think he could easily do another bigger run, to satisfy all of the people out there that would like a more down to earth price on any of his books.

Actually Rudman's Toning and Lith Printing books are both Grails. I would be very, very surprised if you can mention titels of other books on these subjects that are so in-depth and so extensive. Used copies aof Rudman's toning book have been sold for stratospheric prices. That is not without reason.

I've got them all. Rudman emphasizes papers that no longer exist etc. Like Ansel Adams calendars and books a lot of the Tim Rudman magic is from the rotogravure used to print books.
Caviar is rare, expensive, highly prized but I don't need it. Rather have fish and chips ✌️

That is very much kicking in an open door. Any darkroom book is dealing with papers that no longer exist. This book is about toners, not papers. I do not know the Kodak book, but I am pretty sure it covers mostly extinct papers too. Of one thing I am certain. I do not need it. I have the caviar.

If you get desperate, I believe the Rudman Toning book is available as a pdf download somewhere.

I have the toning book, his lith printing books. TREMENDOUS books.

If you buy an used copy of the Kodak G-1 book like I show the back cover you can produce a whole spectrum of colors with 4 or 5 different toners and today's available papers, Ilford and Foma, (Adox seems to be sitting and waiting, smart!)

Sepia toner
Polysulfide toner
Kodak Blue Toner (gold)
Selenium toner
DIY Kodak Poly toner (mixture of Selenium and Polysulfide)

and of course Iron toner, etc. I have never had a death wish so I will leave the uranium salts alone, mercury too.

Just start dabbling. Oh and of course there's 3 or 4 basic print developers

And of course 20°C vs. 38°C..............?

the papers mentioned in those books are no longer available.

I rather look and perhaps learn from Wolfgang Moersch work and if I understand correctly he is still active and posting his work online.
