I am thinking of buying this paper. Any thoughts on the quality of the paper? How does it compare to the Ilford offerings? Or is it just contact sheets and test prints?
I have been using the RC version and find it quite nice. Good blacks and nice highlights.
The highlights sometimes need a little burning in but not much. I would think the FB version would be similar. The price is good so go for it. I bought 200 sheets of the RC and haven't been disappointed.
Since it's made in Czechia, it's probably Fomabrom Variant III. Compared to Ilford MG IV FB:
It has a somewhat thinner base.
It has different spectral sensitivity and you need to check for safelight compatibility. Red would be the safest choice.
It's neutral to warm and it tones nicely.
You'll get different contrast with the same filtration. For the most part, it will give more contrast than Ilford's paper. In order to see what I mean, have a look at the data sheets (Fomabrom Variant III - Ilford MG IV FB) and compare the ISO paper ranges with Ilford filters. The smaller the number, the more contrast you get.
It is said that it's not as hardened as Ilford paper, but it won't be a problem if you're careful.
It is a really nice paper. Nice white paper base, neutral tones. The paper has a nice surface. Much nicer than what you might expect from a "bargain" paper.
