Hi everyone,my name is mazza and i'm so new to forums and talking on line my work mates call me caveman.OK over the last 20 years or more i have been collecting wood and brass cameras as i call them some wet plates but mostly dry plate.Apart from that i also have a wide range of blind shutters,tripods, brass lenses,plate holders from quarter plate up to full plate and more.The majority of cameras and shutters are thornton pickard and are in working condition and most of the shutters i repair and working out the timing is a work in progress.OK all said and done im chasing a brass full plate thornton pickard turntable for the tripod to click into(model doesn't really matter )but i can take measurements'.At the moment am holidaying in NZ.Will look at full plate camera for parts or just the turntable ect.Also i have a lot of spare parts for thornton pickard cameras and shutters,lenses,plate holders,we can swope if somebody has what i need or if you need a part let me know as i would love to help.

ps also have a lot of plate holders that do not fit my camera collection

G'day Maza. Welcome to the forum.
I have a couple of Thrortons, but no spare parts. Tassies a good place to find these old cameras and parts. Other than that there is a few collectors from the UK and Europe who may be able to help.
I just picked up an old Ensign Popular Reflex yesterday that I trying to get the blind shutter working.

Packard is an old American leaf shutter.

Packard Ideal shutters are still in production.

I keep meaning to write an article a about shutters, I have many RP roller blind shutters including two focal plane versions, Norka, Eyelid, Gitzo (studio), and more. Then quite a few SLRs Quarter plate and larger, TP, Butcher (sold also as Ica Tors), Ensign Marion/Kershaw Soho reflex, Mentor, Graflex etc.

Thornton Pickard shutters were sold by Kodak Ltd, through their professional stores. Although the company was wound up around 1939 shutters were made by some former employees who kept the name going, and also offered a repair service for TP cameras and shutters.

Thanks Ian! I didn’t know that Kodak sold T-P shutters and employees continued production/repair… learn something every day if paying attention.

I have a hard copy of the book, it doesn't really have much about the cameras and shutters.

The US importer of T-P shutters was Burke & James, they seemed to have preferred the Aluminium bodied versions, and few survive. The Aluminium alloy they used corrodes. I have similar corrosion issues with aluminium bodied parts on pre-WWII cameras.

About 5 years ago I had a chance to buy a 10x8 Thornton Tourist camera in amazing condition but missing its lens board, it had a prototype roll film back.. Thornton was a genius but lacked any business acumen, this particular Tourist camera was made by Billcliffe in Liverpool, before the Pickard family bailed him out. For many years John Thornton lived a meager existence in the US, living on Patent royalties from Kodak, mostly for his film pack design and early colour cine film.

Back to the Tourist camera, you need to see one fist hand, the 10x8 early version had a large rotating circular lens board holding 3 different FL lenses. I don't think the idea was to have all the lenses attached, rather you rotated to the flange for a particular lens.

I have two prototype T-P roller blind shutters. I must finish my current commitments, then get writing, oh and printing
