Hi,

I bought a Thornton Pickard Junior Reflex camera recently. Despite it's age it is in a good shape. Everything works, the bellows is OK, the shutter cloth is good, the only thing that really needs attention is the shutter mechanism, which is extremely "lazy". I guess I have to open the camera to extract the shutter assembly do some cleaning and lubrication.

I have seen that some members here have experience with that camera. My question would be, how do I access the innards of the camera? Does it suffice to take the back off the case? I would hate to tear the leather of the case, because it still looks good despite the age.

Cheers,
Mark

The shutter is modular and comes out complete, you need to take the adjustment knob off and the side panel, there can be some hidden screws, Do a search here as another member lists where they are.

This is the shutter out of one of my TP cameras, this one came out very easily. I made new curtains, replaced a badly corroded mirror, added a brighter focus screen, repaired a badly cracked body and finally re-covered it.

The two bottom rollers have internal coiled springs they probably need cleaning and re-pensioning. You don't take them apart, I usually flush them through with water and washing up liquid, then rinse well and finally rinse meth through using a syringe, I use a drop of machine oil thinned with meths to lubricate the ends.

Thanks for the fast reply, Ian, and the instructions! Maybe I can take the side panel off without too much damage to the leather.

Cheers,

It should come off with no damage whatsoever. I've three or four more TP Ruby reflex cameras to restore. Depending which size from memory the hidden screw is somewhere to the area where the focus screen sits.
