Hi all, I got a thomas safe light through e bay and a couple of tubes, it appeared to be a good deal. So I got it today and pluged it and the light sure does not seem that bright. Heck my Zone VI LED is far brighter than the Thomas duplex. Did I get gipped? are the bulbs old and need to be replaced? I have always heard how much brighter these lights are and I am confused.

Are you talking about the big hanging lights with the two doors? Amber lights? If so, there is someting wrong with it. The ones we used when I was in school were so bright we had to keep them 99% closed. This was in a 30X30' darkroom with 20 enlargers.

Yeah, if it's a thomas duplex safelight it should be extremely bright. I kept the doors on mine almost closed. I think it takes quite a while for it to light up. Leave it on for 15 minutes then see how bright it is. It should be like a small sun at that point

Cool! keep an eye on the gels, if they fade enough you might get some fogging... glad it's working

Be careful not to turn off by mistake. The unit needs to cool down before the light will come back up. Someone every session does this no matter what instruction is given to each class.

The Thomas Duplex saftelight does not have "gels." There are two sets of glass filters. For black and white paper use, no filters are necessary as it uses sodium vapor tubes. The spectral transmission is so narrow that it is in and of itself, within the correct wavelength for the "safe" spectral area of the paper. Secondly, the safelight is made to be reflected from the ceiling and walls which gives a greater overall perceived illumination level, but results in much less intense light reaching the paper because of the light falloff (1/d^2).

The second set of filters is for use with some color papers with the filter doors totally closed on the safelight, and the second filters stacked on top of the first ones. I have had one in my darkroom since 1982. I find it almost too brigh,t and use it with the doors only open about 3/4-inch - this is in a darkroom that is 10ft x 13ft.

Since I just got this thing I dont know much about them but I did take the filters apart and they are a piece of thin paper like material sandwiched between to clear glasses. It seems to me they would fade. But heck if you had yours since 1982 I guess mine would do fine. Thanks Steve.
