It would be easier for you to put a light dimmer on the Sun and then change the color temperature.

We seem to answering his query as if he is using the darkroom in daylight but he has said twice that he will only be using it at night with only minimal light coming in. OK the problem is defining what is minimal light in terms of intensity but now this is clear my original post may not be far off the mark despite being tongue-in-cheek at the time. If the light coming in is not street lighting but simply unlit darkness then a layer or two of the kind of transparent red gel obtainable in sheets looks to be worth a try, doesn't it?

I've done a lot of printing with only thin curtains on the window. At night of course. Lucky in that there was no street light shining in. Long time ago but iirc, a safelight test showed that I was good for about 4 minutes. I worked fast and used my body to shield any direct light from the window.

Not ideal but it worked. Great fun in the middle of summer when dawn was less than an hour away and I still had loads to print.

Rubilith for the windows. or curtains.

Either that or get off the pot and move shit in your basement to make it a more usuable space. Heck of a lot easier that challenging the laws of physics.

how about dropping a dark denim cloth from the ceiling
with 2 batons on the bottom to weight it, you can roll it up / furl it
when you don't need it down...

Who puts a hot water heater in front of a window! And besides, I have a waterheater I need to move so I can get my darkroom up and running efficiently...hand me the toilet paper...

Actually -- I will get an on-demand heater, mount it on the wall so I'll have space under it.

I used blackout material attached with velcro to the window. However when I had a basement darkroom the problem of dust was more of an issue than light!
