Thinking about Plus-X

Hi Guys- I really like Plus-X and I am thinking about buying a 100ft roll. What are your thoughts on the film. I have just started into darkroom and I am having a ball! I didn't realize what I was missing! I am having so much fun and I am going to walk around with more money in my pocket.--Patrick
 
Arista Premium 100 is said to be Plus-x re-branded-It just costs a whole lot less.I've never used it myself but that's what those in the know say.Check the Freestyle site.

Today I purchased a 100 foot roll of 35mm Plus-X and two pro-packs of 120 Plus-X.

I guess that tells you what I think of it .

I was given a Watson bulk loader and it seems like the most cheaply made thing on the planet. How well do these work? Shoud I buy a diffrent one?
 
I like FP4 Plus a little better, but Plus-X is nice film. It has a nice tonality and it's very forgiving. I think you'll quite enjoy it.

Even though I prefer FP4, Plus-X is a little different and I still shoot some.
 
What do you guys think of tri-x's preformance in the harsh light of mid day?

The Arista mentioned above is a beautiful film, have shot a number of rolls, developed in D76...very nice!

I have one, and it's not my favorite bulk loader of all time. Yet, it works well and hasn't failed me so it can't be all that bad.

Fine, but unnecessarily fast. Why not use a slower film and reap the benefits of less grain and better resolution? Yes, slower films can be more contrasty, but that's not a big problem.
 
I like Plus-X. I love FP4! I think FP4 is the greatest thing since sliced bread, if you pardon the cliche. Anyhoo...
If it is of any value, Plus-X comes in five roll pack for 120, FP4 doesn't. I'm cheap like that. !

Try both, thats the bottom line. Both are great films that excel in different environments.
 
Central Camera in Chicago has good prices on Kodak bulk film, especially if you buy a couple of rolls.

Actually, as far as bulk loaders go, I think my old Watson bakelite loaders are pretty good quality.

I've seen some really shitty loaders, though.
 
Plus-X Examples

I shot them in the Kansas City Crossroads area a week ago. ISO 125, 8 min. @ 20C, HC-110 dil. H.
This was the first Plus-X I've shot since 1977. It has a unique look compared with FP-4 or Fuji Acros. I'm definitely going to try some more. The negatives have much more highlight detail than is apparent in these scans. I'm going to have to print some of these in the darkroom

i have a lloyds bulk loader
it is pretty low budget too,
but it seems to work ...
 
What EI

I'm piggybacking on this thread to ask what you guys with experience shoot Plus-X at? I shoot Tri-X at 200 to 250 for normal conditions. I know some of you will say "test it!" but as a starting point, is the overall, general consensus more like half box speed (as with Tri-X) or closer to box speed?

I have tried varying the EI and frankly for Tri-X I found 400 worked just fine in XTOL undiluted or in Pyro Rollo. I see no reason not to use the Plus-X at box speed. I am not having any problem with the brights blowing out or loosing details in the shadows. I use the matrix readings for the Hasselblad and Nikons. If there is a big SBR, I use the Nikon F-100 as a spot meter to check the bright, the dark and what I want to be the neutral gray.

I like to give one stop extra exposure and process in Xtol or pyrocat HD. But I can also get accceptable negatives at box speed in either Xtol or D-76.

Are you changing the development time when you give it one stop extra exposure?

EI 64/XTOL 1-2- 7.5
EI 125/XTOL 1-2- 8.75
