I developed some Fomapan 200 in HC-110 dilution B today. I know that this isn't recommended because of the short development time of 3.5 min.

My question is would I get better results if I double the dilution and development time?

I don't know about doubling the developing time but diluting it to force a longer dev time is a good idea.

What ISO/ASA did you rate the film for.
I find I can squeeze out 125 okay but 160-200 is pushing things a bit if you like meat in your shadows.

Doesn't HC-110 have a linear development curve?

I rated it at box speed so, 200.

Longer development won't get good shadow detail, it will just increase the contrast that was exposed to begin with so I'd recommend trying 100-125 and see if you like it better.

At the photo lab at my school, we use HC-110, and one of the instructors recommends the Arista .EDU film to the class. He had a sheet up on the door with development times since they are a bit harder to find compared to the other larger film companies. I've used the Arista .edu/Fomapan 100 quite a bit, and the development time for it was 6 minutes. Is it possible that the 3.5 minute time just isn't correct?

Fomapan 200 needs some care & testing as it behaves badly at box speed and my experiences with HC-110 is that too tends to drop effective film speed slightly.

You need to do your own test but a starting point is bracket fro 50EI to 200 EI, many of us use this film at 100EI but there are som that drop the speed even lower. Fomapan 100 & 200 need slightly shorter development times than most others or the contrast goes through the roof but I'd think 3.5 mins at Dil B 20C is a little short, I'd go for about 5 mins initially @100 EI + bracketing.

Once you get your own effective EI & development time nailed down it's an excellent film.
