There's something to be said for a printed photograph

When I was shooting for money, I had a portfolio that has 4x5 chromes with a black mat, tear sheets and prints. Now most portfolios are online.

As an art director I saw many custom portfolios and cases, some made from aluminum (before ready made ones became more common), acrylic, exotic woods and leather. One that stands out was a custom-made fringed western saddlebag, with the photographers initials branded on it. And most work was custom-fitted, laminated 8x10 and larger transparencies with a black surround.

I have a couple of custom portfolio books and slipcovers made by Portfoliobox they are fantastic. I've made books myself but not a portfolio like Dani. That's a lot of work !
Back in the day when I was assisting and schlepping my boss' portfolio around when he was on vacation, they were in clamshell boxes. He had some company ( I can't remember the name ) out of NYC made these laminates with a rubber back, so they were like fancy placemats. They looked nice, but not as nice as Dani's !

Wow, Jim's book looks like a thing of beauty. Have you seen it in person?
DId he commission a book binder to make it for him or did he do all the hand work too ?

Yes, I have seen it. The printed words are raised, as carbon prints can be. All made by him. He makes his own walnut portfolio boxes and LF cameras, too.

It’s a standard portfolio. Not hand crafted. I like the chromes have a magic on a light box. But I’m sure that no ad agency art department has one now. The closest thing is a glowing LCD screen.

Would be really funny if the ad agencies art departments have an intern do cellphone snappies of this guy's book, and do a PDF flip-through to submit to the AD because they like need it so I can look at it on a phone. You know, like squishing a 1200DPI 12x18 inch image to a 2x3 72DPI compressed JPG

His work is of course online as well for those who can't be bothered to look at a physical portfolio. The downside to a book like his is it can only be in one place at a time, while the online portfolio is always available and can be easily updated. Although I respect the hard work and craftsmanship that went into creating his portfolio, the work is nothing special--something I ran into occasionally when I worked as an AD. Elaborate packaging, mediocre content. The photographer or rep got me to look, but that's about it.
