Is there other than a pecuniary reason for Ilford not wishing to sell their less expensive 'Universal' B&W film in the USA? I believe that it is supplied in both '100' and '400' versions abroad. - David Lyga

Ricardo: that Pan 100 apparently is another one. I do remember about one year ago reading that there was a 'universal' B&W film made by Harman that was not being sold in the USA. There is something to this but I am stymied with finding definitive information. Oftentimes, firms do not want their lower priced items compteting with their 'winners'. The Pan 100 your link shows is not cheap. At 3.49 pounds sterling that would be about USD 5. If you live in the UK and do not know about this, maybe I am nuts. - David Lyga

Well David, I haven't heard of a another Ilford film that is in production, only the PAN 100 and 400 films.
BTW, £3.49 makes that film the cheapest Ilford branded 135 film. It is about the same price as the Kentmere films.
Compare that with £4.49 for HP5+.

Other than under the manufacturers actuall brand films are branded under a retail brand, branded as no-name but sold on the manufacturers behalf and sometimes an manufacturer's other well-known brand is used (as Agfa using the Perutz brand after at Perutz film manufacture was cancelled).

Often offered at the same market.

It seems that there was once an Ilford Universal 100 and 400 films. The MDC chart has this on the discontinued films: http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php?Film=Universal&Developer=&mdc=Search
So, whatever it was, it is discontinued. Anyway, for some reason the name "Universal" is still ringing a bell, but I can't put a finger on it!

It is true that Ilford used to offer their films for re-branding until 2004. There were once some Orwo films that were Ilford made.

Perutz film. Now there is a name from the past. i remember that brand from the 1950s. Never shot any, was it a good film?

I have been around ILFORD Photo 27 years and we have never made a film branded ILFORD Universal.

ILFORD PAN 100 and PAN 400 films are lower cost ( and entirely different films from ILFORD and KENTMERE branded films ) offered in some export markets and with some specialist retailers.

I had a couple of rolls of Universal Branded Film that said "Made in England" on the cartridge. So, who made film in England in the 80's? Just curious, both rolls are used and came out fine!

Could the "Made in England" refer to bulk film from a European or other factory packed in the UK as an own-brand product ? (Thinking of Gratispool packing bulk Dynachrome film from the US as their own-brand Gratispool colour in the 1960's.)

There was a line of B&W film sold by Freestyle sales (and possibly other dealers) in plain packing that just said B&W made in England. It used graphics that were strikingly similar to those used by the Ilford firm at the time. I used to buy a lot of it.

It disappeared around the time that Ilford reorganized and said they were no longer going to provide Private label film.

I used several rolls in the 70s for the reason that I was young and poor and Perutz reversal film was cheap!
IMHO it was awful - it liked to reproduce everything in brown and green tones. I still have some of the slides in their characteristic green and white plastic mounts (though I can't think why I've kept them!)

A few years back you were able to buy Harman film in AU (obviously Ilford rebranded) which seemed to be quite a hit with students. Did they decide to give their Universal brand another shot perhaps?

Interesting, ILFORD UNIVERSAL I had never heard of...it was certainly never sold in the UK but the pictures prove it . I guess it must have been a private label deal with a partner somewhere.

Dear Ozphoto, We have never sold a film branded as HARMAN anywhere, but the HARMAN technology Logo does appear ( boldly ) on every ILFORD film box we print so perhaps that's where the confusion comes from.
