Anybody been there? I understand its in the North Dakota badlands just across the Montana border. I'm into rolling hills and grassland coupled with some weather drama.

Yes, very beautiful in their stark way. Best seen at dawn and sunset. Bring plenty of water with you for your hikes. The petrified wood is out of this world. Will give you the true meaning of 'Big Sky' (even though that's the description of the 'Treasure State' to the west of ND).

I used to be stationed in North Dakota, and yes, the badlands where beautiful. I agree with early morning or late afternoon for the pictures. But one thing that Pinholemaster left out, was bring lots of mosquito repellent. They will eat you alive. Also, you will be literally out in the middle of nowhere, so bring your favorite film with. The wind also blows continuously and the place is prone to some wonderful thunderstorms. I am not trying to scare you, just make you prepared.
One year, while camping out there in the fall, a B-52 came down the Little Missouri, we were standing on the plains over looking the river, and it came down about 100 foot over the level of the plains. Of course no camera in hand.
Enjoy yourself.

As others have said, it is a very spectacular location with a moonscape feel to it.

I was there as a 20 y.o. young idiot in love some three and a half decades ago (1971). While hiking I failed to watch my footing and took a 100 foot or so slide down into one of the gullies.

The only smart thing I did was to just "go with the flow" and take the ride. I only had a few sand burns on the palm of my hands and the butt end of my jeans was worn away!

I've been wanting to go back there ever since!

It's a nice place. I've been there a couple of times. I can actually go there for a weekend (it's close enough, as long as the border guards are cooperative  ). I've been pondering going there again sometime soon in fact.

The south unit is nicer than the north unit, IMHO, but they are both worth visiting.
