The Silver Eagle ad at top of page

I clicked on the Silver Eagle advertisement at the top of the page and gave it a quick once over. I wonder what other people have to say about it. Particularly I noticed there was some kind of hundred foot rolls of film for 30-some-od dollars. But I can't remember the brand. Looked interesting though. Any thoughts? Thanks. (no I'm not an advertiser in any way).

Tom, I can't comment on the film from photowarehouse, but I have used the Silver Eagle paper. I don't have any science or data on it but in my opinion it's a very good value.

Nothing remarkable but it's consistent. Compares favorably to MGIV. Bright white base ... good but not remarkable tonal separation. Glossy has good black. Matte much less so but has no sheen at all but it would be great for hand-coloring. I'm saving some just for that.

I usually use a cold-tone oriented version of Ansco 130 and it gives slightly cold-neutral prints. Haven't tried warmtone developers. Have not had good luck getting it to lith.

It's not Galerie quality but if you want to keep a good workhorse / economy paper around, then it's worth looking at.

I have only used the Ultrafine Xtreme 100 35mm 100ft and it's a very good film and the price is certainly cheap enough. Slightly grainy, but not that bad. The one nice thing is that it's emulsion has no defects that I can find and after it's processed it lies as flat as a board. Now, the 120 film in ISO 100 is a different horror story. If you want to try junk film that's the one to try. I won't buy it again, PERIOD! Now there is another 120 100 speed film called Ultrafine Xtreme that's suppose to be different. Haven't tried that yet and I won't until I hear other folks comment on it. JohnW

I have had a long history of pretty good luck with Photowarehouse, though I have also had some products I would not buy again. They are decent people selling a variety of films and papers under their own label, and the actual film they sell at any given time is not easily referenced to what somebody bought two years ago. The material is inexpensive and I think they do their best to provide a good product for the price. The Extreme film I bought in a 100 ft roll has been great. More than that I cannot say.

Yes, I'll sing praise where praise is due and Ultrafine Xtreme 100 35mm is a really good film. I've used a couple of their papers and they weren't bad either, but nothing special. It's the Ultrafine Plus 100 in 120 that doesn't have me singing praise and there are many other folks out there that feel the same. But the biggest problem for me is the fact that they know this film is absolute junk and they continue to sell it as though there is nothing wrong with it. It's like selling birth control pills that are actually Vitamin C tablets. By the time you fine out your 11x14 print has a great big number 8 right in the middle or mottled fungi in your sky and light areas, it's to damn late. I believe when a seller knows they have a faulty product in their line they have two courses of action to decide on. 1. They can pull the product off the shelf and send it back to the manufacture or eat it. 2. You can inform the buying public and sell it as a holga/practice film, which would mean a lower price probably. But maybe not? Oh, I forgot about a number (3) course! The number (3) course is to just play dumb and continue to sell it to unsuspecting customers. It seems Photo Warehouse has picked door number three and in my humble opinion that door is a losers door. Just my rant, but if somebody doesn't say it this kind of thing is going to continue and that's just not right. JohnW

Maybe you can sell that 11x14 print to your local television news outlet. Tell them you got a photograph of God, who revealed him/herself in the form of the numeric 8/mottled fungi in the sky.

Then use the proceeds to get some Ultrafine 100 in 35mm?

That's an idea! I've seen crazier ideas make people a ton of money. The Xtreme 100 35mm is real good stuff and worth the money for sure. I guess when you buy from a place with "warehouse" in the name you roll the dice.
