I am looking to acquire a copy of Eliot Porter's seminal monograph; "The Place No One Knew: Glen Canyon on the Colorado". I'm looking for a hardcover copy in very good to new condition.

I had a copy, but loaned it to a grandson as a research source for a school report. As is sometimes the case with grandson's, my copy went the way of all flesh.

Please PM me with any offers.

Thank you.

Jeff

Your post really brought back old memories of my days in the sierra club. I still have all my exhibit format books. They were responsible for much of my interest in photography. i do have some extra copies but unfortunately not the one you want. Have you tried eBay? I got several of my replacements for some damaged copies from there. Good luck.

Hey Larry. I'm also watching eBay. Typically, if I can remain patient, I'll eventually find what I'm looking for. Just thought I'd give these classifieds a try.

Lake Powell is receding at a record pace. Some of the places Eliot Porter photographed in Glen Canyon are once again above water. I'm hoping to pay a visit this fall/winter/spring and make a few "homage" photographs with my 4x5.

I remember a prediction in the book that Lake Powell would silt over in this number of years. it is pretty scary that the environmental predictions are starting to come home to roost. I will leave you with my favorite quote from Edward Abbey:

Benedicto: May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. May your rivers flow without end, meandering through pastoral valleys tinkling with bells, past temples and castles and poets' towers into a dark primeval forest where tigers belch and monkeys howl, through miasmal and mysterious swamps and down into a desert of red rock, blue mesas, domes and pinnacles and grottos of endless stone, and down again into a deep vast ancient unknown chasm where bars of sunlight blaze on profiled cliffs, where deer walk across the white sand beaches, where storms come and go as lightning clangs upon the high crags, where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you --- beyond that next turning of the canyon walls."

You could check with Ken Sanders Rare Books in Salt Lake City. Ken’s shop is pretty eclectic, but Utah and other western material is emphasized.

Another option is to "lease", not "buy" -- you can buy them in good shape for $250. While most large libraries have a copy, most will NOT lend it out -- but some will. Just use ILL -- Inter-library Loan.
