A couple weeks ago, I located a very clean, well kept first edition copy of The Photographers Eye by Szarkowski. I was looking forward to reading some of his insight into how he curated the exhibits for the museum, and expected more of a "how to" style of publication. When I received it, I was surprised to see that its more photos than words. At first glance it looks like a 4 page essay followed by numerous examples to illustrate the essay.

Have you read this book? How did you like it? Did it help you, and if so how?

I think he appealed especially to people in his personal social circle.

to paraphrase lone watie, it's not for readin', it's for lookin'

i once delivered a series of introductory lectures on photographic composition as a formal system - i used many of those pictures as illustrations... they are exquisitely chosen... the text is there to kick start the brain and push it in the right direction, then you're on your own
