The Photo A Day Challenge

I developed all of the films for January, and early February, and contact printed them. Some interesting shots there !

It's still a challenge to find the image every day (they'll be several still lives of fruits in the same location, but even attempting still lives is an interesting challenge for me). More of a challenge is to find the time, while working on the house's extension (can't complain though, it's the same extension that gave me the opportunity to create a darkroom, and the darkroom is the first finished room in the new part of the house !)

Today's shot was a view of river Loire at dawn and in the mist.

It's hard to keep things fresh when you shoot each day, I just went on a two week road trip through France to keep things fresh. I've posted a few blogs about the trip and will try and keep caught up.

Awesome! I'm looking forward to this weekend. We are going to Bozeman this weekend and I am looking forward to doing a lot of shooing new and different things! Not quite as exciting as your trip but something fresh all the same! Gets hard to come up with something different every day.

Online slideshow has been updated for January 18 through February 6.

While I try to effectively sequence these in-camera, more and more I find myself simply picking a promising location and returning several times until that location seems exhausted. What's lost in presentation is made up for in simplified logistics, I fear.

I also maintain a list of possible subjects for reference when my time is short. That list currently has 44 items on it. Possibilities are added as I drive around every day. I keep a small electronic voice (memo) recorder with me to add possible locations as I find them.

It's getting more challenging. I need to begin venturing out a bit further, I think. Or possibly revisiting subjects for different interpretations.

P.S. Apologies for the crappy scans. Especially that grain in the skys and other highlights. The negatives are not that grainy. But you can't tell that to this cheap-ass $69 borrowed flatbed scanner.

Thanks, Lori. Me too.

Although at some point I'm probably going to need to replace it with something. Some of those blank white skies were intentionally allowed to scan that way since they looked so bad otherwise.

There has to be something out there better than this thing...

I just picked up five boxes of film developer, then found out the paper I use is backordered.
Oh well, one day I'll be caught up.

Well, this has been a great exercise so far. It has become habit to take a picture everyday. No, they are not all great pictures but I am honing my skills every day. I've found it difficult to get in the darkroom that often but would like to make that a habit also! Thanks again for suggesting this project.

I haven't found taking the photos to be a problem, although I've missed a day or two. The issue is getting the darkroom work done for me.

i was all geared up to do this challenge,
and we had "technical difficulties" and i had no darkroom for 3 months

maybe 2011 for me ...

Well, I'm also a bit behind in the darkroom work (a month?) which is no big deal, I know I'll catch up eventually. Last week I nearly forgot to do my daily so I had to get out of bed, put on the pj's and get set up. 10 minutes later I was back in bed, snug as a bug.
What I find difficult in this challenge is the scanning and uploading of pics to the net...rather go to the dentist than do that stuff, ugh! :-(

I had decided early on that for logistical reasons I would limit my presentation to negative scans. Even so, I'm also over a month behind. The photos are there, just waiting for time to process and scan.

And like Rob, I've also missed a few days. It's unavoidable. At first I considered just posting blank frames with some sort of cute quotation or cartoon. But then I came to my senses and decided to simply slide my negatives back to fill in the ocassional missed day. Then expose an extra on the other end to make it up. They are still perfectly sequential, just not perfectly chronological. Such are the imperfections of life. If I were retired I might see - and be able to do - things differently.

Had hoped to process this weekend, but obligations are again starting to crowd in...

We're coming up on three months! I've managed to post something every day. Mostly scans, but prints about a third of the time, although they're pretty rushed. I've identified which ones I'll come back to, as well as finding some gems in the ones I passed over, so I'm building quite a backlog. My justification is that it is better to put negatives aside for printing later than wanting to print and having nothing worthwhile.

Some of my postings are do-overs: they didn't make the grade the first time, but I went and shot them again with a different lens or in better light or whatever.

I've built up quite a collection of graffiti and street art, and I think I can do a 'sweep' some weekend with colour film. That would make an interesting collection.

I haven't done the 'dog on the couch', nor have I shot a beggar or homeless person, nor a sunset, so I figure I haven't hit bottom yet!

Some other interesting things that happened: I made a sale of two prints when someone saw me shooting an old hotel with the 4x5, on two occasions I've been interrupted by security staff, I've been propositioned by a meth addict (which I politely declined), and again with the 4x5, I've had unsolicited conversations where the name 'Ansel Adams' was floated.

So far, so good!

I've taken a few bad shots in this challenge, but I have a number of really good shots that I wouldn't have taken if I wasn't out doing the challenge.

Of course shooting the NHL for work has saved me a number of days.

I can't believe that I am still doing this.

It has been a while since I posted in this thread and I wanted to record some thoughts. I have noticed that some of the others have been having darkroom issues, well so have I and I have a large backlog of Tri-x and T-Max 400 to process and print. I just got back eight rolls of Kodachrome from Dwayne's and I haven't really had time to do more than take a quick look at the slides. The worst problem that I have had so far is organizational. Things might have gone better if I had left the Three Stooges in charge. I lost the notebook with the data for all the rolls of film that I had shot prior to about mid-February so I started a new notebook. Well two weeks later I lost the replacement but I found the original.:rolleyes:

As near as I can tell, I have missed three days. It has now become second nature to grab the camera bag when I leave the house. I have even managed to get a few nice images. I had intended to use my RB 67 and shoot some roll-film but this exercise has so far been mostly a 35mm show.

Ain't that the truth! My darkroom is looking a bit like Woodstock on Day 4. And I managed to make my first big blunder a few days ago -- pouring a tray of paper developer back into my jug of film developer, even though everything is labelled clearly. I didn't realize my mistake until after I'd developed 4 rolls of film. But I decided it would be interesting to soldier on and recalibrate my film rating and development time...just to see what my film can do. I'm essentially pushing 3 and 4 stops and the negatives look surprisingly good.

Good to see you're still in, Mopar_Guy.

I did get a bunch of printing done this week... which is a step in the right direction.
