The Robert Mapplethorpe show 'The Perfect Moment In Cincinnati" from 25 years ago is being displayed at the Contemporary Arts Center until 13 March 2016.
I looked at a bunch of his work recently and it just feels so dated, so 80s with all the venetian blind shadows and the ultra-modern vases, the diffusion and so forth.
No offense, but it's a bit icky. Kind of like those Judy Dater 4x5 nudes from the 70s with all the mustaches and hairy crotches. Just icky.
One of my favorite photographers. His photo of the tattered American flag is iconic. It took me a while to warm up to his photos, and not all of it works, but what does work is as good as anyone's.
