The New Leitz - Wetzlar Leica M6 (and the dreaded film scratching issue)

Radost really should buy a Konica RF if he wants a RF camera that has a 1/4000 sec shutter.
All his imaginary problems would be solved!
I had one for a while. And while the meter was probably the best I have ever experienced it was too heavy and clunky. Meanwhile a light SLR gives me those speeds.

Your black is way off. A green tint. Probably because of the ND filter. As a matter of principle I don’t want to mess up with the contrast of the 28mm Elmerit. Tried a lot of ND. Even in video “where they are necessary“ the results are annoying.
 
So when you are sporting a couple M7's, beautiful women just let you walk up and take their picture?? The Leica mystique!

She was most impressed by my ND filter. Like, really impressed The power of knowledge....

What was the first lens that you attached to your new M6? I'm longing to get my hands on one.

The finish of the matte black paint TTA 28 5.6 does seem to match up to the new M6. You may be onto something.
 
Well, I spent a summer with a shitty M7 only working on 1/60 and 1/125.
Spent a summer shooting 35mm @ F16... great pics. Never missed shitty over rated bokeh.

Did you forget to pack a battery? It’s a shame you have shitty bokeh. Maybe try a different lens?

This is all so ironic.

To answer your questions: the problem was that I forgot to bring a proper M.
And you should read what Don Goldberg has to say about the M7’s mechanism. Not tender about it, no sir. I will not copy paste his email but you can ask him.

The lens in question? The bokeh king. Ironic, innit?

Suuuure, boke is a magnificient tool to add some ohlala to a woman’s portrait, but it should be used strictly as an Utilitarian tool for street and reportage: where it will look natural in a low light setting, but absolutely unnatural in a well lit scene.

Looking at some forced blur is something that’s very bothering to my eye. The background of a given scene, the setting, is extremely important. Blurring it out forcefuly screams amateurism. It is not art by any means.

My propos about bokeh sounds crazy to the newbie crowd, I know. Because bokeh is exactly why they think their “art” is special, and their equipment legendary. And separating your eye from your mind’s eye, or to say it better: to see your work as it is, and not what you THINK it is, is a very long road. It’s exactly the same syndrome as Anorexia, where if you’d ask the anorexic person to draw himself, he would invariably draw a very fat character.
Breaking the wall between what we think we see and what we actually see is a lifetime work. And I’m not saying I’m above any of this: if I had to surf through all my prints I think
I’d burn 95% of it with a “wtf was I thinking” face.

If you have an out of focus background, you want it to look good, and some lenses are better at it than others, but the obsession with bokeh is incomprehensible to me. People post images which otherwise would have been pitched in the bin and say ooo-ahh look at the bokeh. And it has been going on for twenty years or so. Seems like it is time to move on to the next obsession. I note diffusion filters may be making a comeback, but they are in an existential struggle with sharpness so I don't rate their prospects high.

Regarding out of focus. I like the subject matter to stand out in detail, lenses like a floating lens element Summilux 35mm f1.4 lens wide open is fantastically sharp, even in the corners. Adding neutral density doesn't change the sharpness of the lens.
 
Bokeh of course if not the be all and end all, but for portraits can be wonderful. And if you are lucky enough to have a lens that has beautiful bokeh, then it is a plus.

The thing is, people like NB unfortunately confuse bokeh for subject isolation. For street scenes subject isolation due to a large aperture used can really help the image. It emphasizes the moment and capture, and removes distractions from the background like a dood who maybe be hopping around taking as many pics as possible hoping for the one good shot.

If everything was in focus, it would be a much weaker image. People who understand how to use apertures for good effect would know that.

As for portraits, well, the gorgeous bokeh of the Summilux Asph 50 is a big assist in this image. No need to say anything more.

Funny thing, I saw you appear on various forums. First, criticizing leica, gushing over nikon cameras. Then various chinese and cheapies. Then, challenging the silly leica prices and lenses with stellar voigtlander offerings. And now, gushing over leica.
Yeah, We all witnessed your ascension to leica fanboy. Pretty classic john doe roadmap, I’d say.

Us moderators have been doing that - with virtual popcorn of course. And in my case, with a rueful look.
Personally I just want to know whether we can be assured that this new camera - or any other camera for that matter - will produce "unique deep grey tones with an almost silvery/metallic look" .

I'm going to suggest that all cameras will produce unique deep grey tones with an almost silvery/metallic look. The trick is to photograph something that is deep grey, almost silvery metallic colored.

I'm sure the new lieca will be capable of that.

I'll be interested to see if there are any subtle differences in the new made m6 when people get them in hand, which is why I peeked back in this thread after half a dozen pages.
