the name

Well now Aggie, there were a lot of names posted yet they did not seem to be what you folks were looking for, judging from the choices you posted. I dont mean this as a critizism only as an observation. Given that you guys are the ones publishing and doing the work, perhaps the best thing would be that among all of you who are organizing this pick a name. Whatever name you pick it is sure to displease someone, so might as well pick something that is comfortable for all of you.

If you want a somewhat "artsy" name many combination of words can describe it. For example

Negative & Positive
Framed silver
Negative image
SIlver image
Negative capture
Negative space
Negative expression

and on and on.....I would say just pick a name, stick with it and move forward. In the end what should matter more is the magazine format, content and cover photograph. The name is important but it should not be something to be stressing about.

honestly, I still like Sean's suggestion: "grain" but that's the graphic designer in me. It seems to grab your attention very quickly in an edgy sort of manner. But I honestly don't care too much what the magazine is called as long as the content is high qualilty.

why not just "The Journal of Analog Photography" and then a sub-title describing the contents of the issue--in regard to the categorizing of the magazine as a "special issue"

I voted for LFC, which is catchy and doesn't alienate any particular process (as would anything involving "silver" or even "negative"--well, maybe there are processes without film, per se, but still, even people who use those processes are probably also interested in film), and doesn't provoke pedantic arguments about the meaning of "analog." "Negative Space" is a cool name, but it might also convey a different, unintended meaning (i.e.--"cranky and contrarian space"), and I think the magazine should project a more positive image. Although I originally liked "Traditional Photography" in the earlier thread, I now think that is too limiting, since I'd like to see some visually innovative, non-traditional photography as well using wet darkroom materials, some of which may themselves be non-traditional.

I like Grain too. The best alternative to date in my estimation. Don't like LFC as it will just get lost on the shelf IMHO.

trouble with LFC to me is I can't say it, I can't remember what it the letters stand for, and it reminds me of KFC (ok once a year, but no more!). I'd like it better without the acryonm ie "Light, Film & Camera".

Can't see Grain being appropiate since most claim they don't have any!

I voted for "Traditional Photography" but can see how that could be a bit boring and not encompase new old ways of doing things.

LFC which also stands for (Liverpool Football Club , my workmate has LFC plastered all over his cubicle) still doesn't grab me yet. I guess because maybe it should be LFCP> light - camera - film - photographer or maybe LLCFP >light - lens - camera - film - photographer. Can photography be broken down into three items such as LFC without neglecting other important aspects?

Dang-it Jeremy, the "Journal" was just the name I was going to suggest. I've been successful in getting published in several (2-actually) "journals"; Journal of Chemistry and the Journal of Electrochemistry.

But my favorite is "GRAIN". It sounds like "Grit", an ancient weekly on Wall Street stuff. However I voted for "Classic Photography". At any rate, it will be an up-hill battle for sure.

I voted for L,F,C, I'm just concerned that it's not going to jump visually from the stand when it's next to all the other Photographers Digests out their. but the idea is strong hopefully the graphics will draw attention.

If you don't mind me chucking in my ten-pence-worth...

I think the title HAS to include the word 'photography'. If it's going to get onto the news stand, it's going to be doing battle with thousands of other titles. You have about a tenth of a second to grab your buyer's attention, and if they have to work at ascertaining what the magazine's actually about, you've lost them.

Obviously if the magazine is going to be subscription-only, it's a different matter. Don't know if that helps or just confuses things further!

I agree Ailsa, that you need to capture the attention right away. You could also substitue camera instead of photography. It convyes the same meaning.

I went for "Traditional Photography" 'cos:

As Ailsa says, it instantly denotes a photography magazine
It separates it from digital, emphasising the positive rather than the negative (no pun intended!).
It encompasses ALL traditional photography, from E6 slide through silver printing to alternative processes and beyond
It sounds good

There's probably a few other reasons too. Add "The APUG Quarterly" and the tagline "We like it wet!" and I think you've got it covered...

BUT you can't please all the people all the time and whilst I'm glad that Aggie is taking the time and trouble to canvas our views any attempt to run the magazine as an APUG-wide democracy just isn't going to work. My thought: Get the suggestions, pick one, move on.

Aggie, you have given yourself a huge task. Thank you very much for taking it on 'cos I think it will be a really great achievement when it comes off, but please don't make it any harder for yourself!

Whatever name gets picked you can count on my subscription and my support.

I'd like to suggest a name that is more descriptive and inclusive of the darkroom aspects of this group. I'm still thinking of what that might be....hmmm.

I agree with Ailsa. There needs to be the word "photography" in there. If not in the title, then in a sub-title. LFC sounds too techie. Don't know what you plan on this magazine being, but in my opinion it should be primarily about photographs and only secondarily about the techincal things that go into making them.

"Photography with Film" is really the idea you need to get across. Light, film, camera, could apply to digital except for the film. That's only one out of three.

"Film-based Photography" is the idea, but it does not sound at all interesting.

I don't think the name matters as much as the sub title--something like:
"A monthy magazine dedicated to film-based photography."

I am with you Michael, LFC is stupid. Plain old stupid. Still sounds like KFC. There has to be more that this to name this thing. Maybe it is not a good idea at all for this to be chosen by committee. Maybe the editor needs to step up and say, "This is what we call it". Done period. If this is how it will be run then we need to forget it as it will never get to press. Simple. This is a business. Run it as such. Right now it is a fantasy. Sorry for the harsh words but that is how I see it.

Photo Alchemy is better than lfc, but I am used to seeing 'Alchemy' as part of jazz band names. I see a site called photo-alchemy so not sure if there are any copyright issues there..

But this is my last word on it. Sean please lock this thread. Per Steve, Sean and I will hass it out. No sense letting a group decide. If it was left to this, NO name would ever be good enough or of appeal to everyone. Fantasy or no.
