I put this in my pbase galleries. Hand holding the 2.8FX while dodging the waves to keep my feet dry. Stupid titles no doubt but lately I've had the spirit of things on my mind. I would be glad if you had a look but it probably won't "rock" your world.

Those are really nice shots. However, they look a bit murky gray on my computer screen. Are these scans of the negs?

They are scans from prints and look right on my monitor. The only one that came off a bit murky on my screen is the one with the stone drinking water. That is the problem with sharing on line. Thanks for letting me know.

They look rather murky here too. I have an older Dell LCD monitor - but most B&W looks OK on it.

I have found diffuse light and wet rocks brings out the shape of the rocks. Never had much luck with sun and rock.

Ok I am looking on another computer and it does seem that the dmax is not quite there in the blacks. So I guess I should go more according to this monitor than the other. This one is in a sunlit room though and hard to see while the other is in a darkroom. Maybe I can adjust the contrast on the other one. Thanks

The photos are great, but like others said they look dark [murky]. They lack pop. I think the problem is in the scanning.

Yep, sorry, same here (murky). This is why I prefer looking at a print in person rather than on a computer screen. Everyone's screen is different, but the prints always look the same in person

Dennis -

I just looked through your other sets and they all seem to have the same problem. I am wondering if you need to callibrate your scanning software and/or your monitor?

BTW - your galleries look very nice otherwise.

B&W scans always suck but those are nice pics that I am sure look much nicer printed hanging in a frame.

I'm with you on the concept and the originals are probably really nice, they are muddy on my laptop though. This is one reason I haven't posted any photographs, I tried scanning but just couldn't bring myself to put up images that aren't up to the originals, I'm not the worlds best or most productive photographer so I applaud those who do.

I know this is OT for this site, but the key here is to look at your histogram when choosing black- and white-points in the image. Also helps if your scanning software will highlight areas that are pure black/white so that you know where you do or don't have detail.

Thanks for all the input and advice. The thing is that I have a new computer and now I see it is set very contrasty so I compensated with the scans trying to carry the longish scale of the prints. I will delete all that and try again. Funny thing is that they look ok on my face book page.

To ruin your day even further (and go more OT), facebook will silently auto-adjust your images when you post them. Generally, it will trash them (I've noted they come out paler with poorer contrast, but that was with some very dark images) but it's possible that they improved your postings by accident.

My favorite is #9. As far as looks, they are ok here (using a new 24" iMac). But they do seem to lack snap. Dead lighting/lack of contrast. Could be the film too. Never found good results from TMY even though the new TMY-2 is streaks better.

On a side note, have you ever tried any Rollei films? Fantastic quality & tonality.

In fact most the prints are from TMY-2. I haven't tried Rollei film. Mostly I shoot ACROS except this day I knew there was no room for me to take a tripod.. it was a family outing, so I took the TMY and shot 125 at 5.6. I like the prints though I don't like how contrasty a silver print needs to be to look good on modern paper. I prefer very long scale and that would be where I went wrong with the scans being concerned with trying to get the shadow detail to show on the monitor. But really it is just a monitor adjustment thing. Dennis
