The future of the Aussie print exchange

Hi Folks,

Before I start a thread for round #14, I'm just doing a state of play here.

I think I have let things go a bit from my own perspective. I did something for this round that I wasn't happy in doing. I've also let things drop in keeping a reasonable level of timing.

If people are happy for me to do so, I am happy continuing to co-ordinate the round. If some one else wants to jump in, I am also happy in handing over the reigns.

So, what are you thoughts?

Thanks for the vote of confidence Marc. Like many, I do get myself into a bit of a Funk when it comes to photography. I am trying to turn that around!

I'm also not worried if dates slip a little, someone has to pull out, whatever, etc

It's an exchange of prints by mainly people in Australia. I believe there are occasionally also one or two outside Australia. Usually there are about ten participants and each one prints enough to be distributed to the others by the coordinator. There is usually a sign on period of about a month followed by the printing period which is about one or two months.

What are everyone's thoughts on when it's fine to upload scans (not necessarily here)? Would people prefer to have had a chance to see the photos without the small risk of ruining the surprise? What about older negatives?

For me I enjoy the prints (and the paper, technique and so on), beyond putting digital versions up - and so I'd 'vote' for not doing that, purely to keep it as a print exchange, rather than just for the pictures.

I mean more unrelated to the exchange. I post some of my stuff at rangefinderforum and perhaps some people use things like Flickr. How long is sufficient after the exchange? I would expect forever is unreasonable but I do agree that it being a print exchange is special.

Basically, my thoughts are that if I've got an image I'd particularly like to share, I can use it in the print exchange to share it in its nicest form but what if I want to share it with others eventually?

I'm with Marc on this... A print exchange of film based photography but to exclude any form of computer generated imaging workflow in the process of making the final print is my preference. It is possible to upload files into a gallery after distribution and receipt of the prints and for participants in a round to enter their comments directly against the images in a gallery. This might then be a refinement of current processes which keeps the image and comment together for all to see... Fred

A fellow Commonwealther, sure. A fellow where there is a monarch as the head of state, sure. A fellow who used to live in Oz, sure. I see no reason why we can have anyone on the planet joining this exchange. Not that there is any exclusion, just some strange justification on how a participant could e considered Oz or Kiwi, or monarch ruled or... Love it.

I think it is one ofte cheapest exchanges out there for the potential number of prints you can receive. I say this based on the blind print exchange where you can end up sending at least one print around the globe for half the price as getting up to 10-12 prints to one location and back again.

Cost, print for print being sent to one destination is going to be cheaper than send multiple prints to multiple locations/

yep, cheap to send 10 unmounted prints to Aussie address, not so to send to 10 addresses around the world. So, if a commonwealther/ex Aussie/anyone is happy to pay to get their prints to the Aussie address and back, no problem for them to join in IMO. Didn't we have a NZer as well... but then they are a state of Oz

However from my POV, this is all moot as I won't be participating in the next one due to an ill wife and I won't be committing to the exchange at this point. So feel free to ignore my thoughts

Hey Nige,

Also sorry to hear the news. That is not good at all. I hope your wife has a speedy recovery.

OK, as for the exchange...... At the moment, I am not sure whether I can organise it. I know I won't be a participant in the foreseeable future. We are currently doing some reno's at home, which has put a hold on anything happening under safe light for a while.

So, we have some choices:

Someone else runs and co-ordinates the exchange and we get going soon.
If no one wants a go, we hold off until I am ready.
I am (semi) happy to co-ordinate a current exchange, but not be a participant. I would not expect to get a print in the parcels for me (but I would have the added benefit of looking at them before I send them on their merry way!)

So, let me know what you think.

thanks guys... she hopefully is on the road to recovery to a long and annoying [me] life!!!! She just has a whole lot of nasty chemicals to 'process' first, unlike me who can just leave them in the cupboard for a bit to print another day!

I'd be OK to participate if it was just wet darkroom prints.
Can't promise they'd be any good but I can promise to bash 10-15 out to share.
They might even be flat by the time they went through the postal system
