I received the FE2 and flash yesterday so I shot a quick test roll to make sure everything was good.
I'm not sure which lens was used in these shots so I won't guess. I used all of my lenses to make sure all would work.
The good news is that it's fine. I checked it with the SB16 and it seems to be fine for flash also though I haven't finished that roll yet. As an aside...wow! that SB16 is HUGE! I ordered an SB24 to replace it...that's just way too big, and it's too bad too because it's in very nice shape with all boxes and accessories just like it came from Nikon. If anyone would like it...just let me know, I'll make you a deal. It's too bad too, I love the "no-screen" controls; very easy to operate.

I shot Eastman Double X at 400 and developed in D96 for time + 20% which was a mistake because the conditions were very sunny and contrasty. I should have just dev'd for the specified time. These were printed on a grade 2 filter and were still a bit too contrasty overall.

As you can see on the contact sheet many were overexposed because I was shooting wide open to make the focusing conditions as difficult as possible.

I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to divest yourself of that flash, it is extraordinarily good.

You could think of getting a small SB15 it is small and brilliant for carrying around. But that SB16 is something else; chews batteries though.

Metz 32 CT4 is possibly the best unit for the FE2 and/or F3. I have one of these complete with acessories to make it into a hammerhead flash unit or one that resides on the hot shoe of the camera. All complete with TTL and everything else the camera body is capable of. You just require the correct SCA cable and you're laughing.

That SB16 is brilliant though.

Did I mention that the SB16 is fantastic?

Forgot to mention that the Metz 32 CT4 with the hammer head handle, which contains the batteries. Is capable of around 500 full charge flashes before starting to die. Great for weddings or fashion stuff; lasts forever.

I run rechargeable Ni-Cads in mine. First set lasted around 15 years, still on my second set, they are about 12 years old.

I must be missing something - from your previous thread about this FE2 and the FM2 it was to replace, I supposed that you were shooting with Nikon lenses, all auto diaphragm. To me, the idea that you had to shoot wide open to make focusing difficult doesn't add up, as an auto diaphragm lens would naturally be focused wide open, then would close to selected shooting aperture for exposure. It seems to me that overexposing with flash won't serve that aim, as overexposure is likely to blow out fine detail. There are distance and lens opening requirements for effective use of an SB-16 in TTL mode, which are described in the manual, and show in abbreviated form on the flash's calculator dial. Once you're satisfied with your lenses' focusing on the FE2, you can verify the SB-16's TTL exposure accuracy by shooting at apertures more in line with ordinary shooting.

Thanks and regards,
Vince

I was shooting aperture priority without flash to test the focus, I also tested the flash. I guess I could have been more clear on the wording.

Don't overlook the Sunpak 555 or the newer (I believe) 611. I used an FE2 for some back-up and almost all receptions when I shot weddings. I loved the high flash sync speed along with the TTL module for the FE2. You could really "reach out" with that setup. I have owned and handled many 35mm cameras and there were a few I could find no fault with. The FE2 was one of the few I could find no fault with. Enjoy a finely made, well rounded camera. JohnW
