Hi Jerry
We are almost ready to launch the workshop on elevatorworkshops.com
We have had lots of support and interest . we have secured the proper facilities and back up efficency rooms very close to the main workshop , locations.
All the instructors are on board and right now we are working the schedual, prices and necessary requriments for all the attendees to consider for this workshop.
We are also in negotiation with a beautiful location to host our Print Showing and I would like all sales of prints to go to a good cause which is up for discussion as well.
This workshop is being designed to be an annual event, that is the foundation for all our mini workshops that we have during the year.
Les and My goal is to promote the idea of shooting for a series of work rather than a greatist hit type of workflow.
All our mini course Instructors are working with this goal in mind and the Oct workshop will be the one where we try to pull it all together with world class instructors , like Joe Cornish, Bill Schwab , Sandy King and Les Mclean in conjunction with Elevator Printing Services we hope to let each attendee work from concept to final show print hanging and seeing their work in a real destination and hopefully the sales of the work benifiting a worthy cause in the GTA where Elevator lives.
there will be lots of incentives for each attendee so I have to lay it all out in a cohesive order before we go live with this .

so any ways we are close, and as soon as we launch people can start booking their spots and accomodations.
camping - efficiency cabins for all budget.
One price for all on the workshop

Ohhh this one sounds so tempting... Not only a chance to meet and work with some of the modern-day icons of the film photography world, but to do it in my ancestral stomping grounds. (and maybe rub shoulders with Big Joe Mufferaw.... now if you know who that is, you are a true valley boy.)

Unfortunately, with a show opening the next weekend, I will probably be unable to make it. (another kind of show... in one of my other lives, I am the musical director for a community theatre group - www.theatrekent.org ...another one of those gigs where I was "promised" I wouldn't have to teach the vocals or play the rehearsal piano. aaarrrgggghhhh!!!!)

There's got to be some way I can swing this one.

Hi Folks

Here is an update and general guideline to what is happening.

This will be a workshop that is for all skill levels.
This will be a colour and black and white workshop from all methods of image capture. Limited film processing will be onsite.
The accomodations fees are separate from the Course fees but I think a room with double, is going for around $80 per night. *please contact Valerie at number below for your accomodations.*
Les , Sandy , Brian , Vickie , Laura and I shared a couple of cabins in Feb and they were very nice and comfortable

Joe Cornish lands around 17 October and has Lecture and Gallery show of his work on the weekend of the 18th and 19th , all are welcome to his show, I hear from a few people that Joe Cornish is a pretty good photographer eh.

Wed October 22 all students arrive late morning early afternoon , settle in and we will organize some shoots, first evening we will have group meeting around the fire get to know one another before the official workshop starts.
www.thewhitepines.com Valerie and Shaun Popkie are the owners, 1 - 613-752-2884
there are single rooms in full effeciency cabins, there are hookups for trailors, and as well camping facilities with washroom and showers for those camping or trailor hookup.
This is the first accomodation location to fill , as needed another effeciency Motel very close is ready to book. Laura and I are going up next week to check out the second location by staying the night .
Direct contact with Valerie is suggested to confirm your stay

Thurs October 23 - Sun October 26 , early morning shoot, late afternoon shoot, mid day lectures on technical issues and editing work for print critique , and evening print critiques.
We will be rotating the students between the instructors. To give a well rounded discussion on lighting, composition and techniques.
We have been scouting locations in the area, Algonquin Park is within an hour from the facilities, as well Shaun and Valerie have been scouting locations for us and Les and I will be scouting and finalizing spots in June.

Joe Cornish, Bill Schwab, Sandy King and Les McLean are all excellent teachers and I am very proud to have them with us.
As the course fills up we anticipate some guest lecturers decide to drop in and visit , but more on this later in the year.
We will try to anticipate skill levels and break the groups as such, within reason and scope of the workshops.

Each student can expect to take home notes, four 16x20 prints made on site, hours and hours of teaching and blisters on their feet.
As well Sun evening will be the night we look at all the work and select the show that will be printed , framed by Les and Bob.
For those out of town or province some of the instructors are staying on for the Mon, and Tues to due personal work and would not mind the company.
All will be back in Toronto for the Wed.

Wed October 29th 2008
We have chosen one of two locations downtown Toronto to have a gala auction of the work produced over the course of this workshop and as well the work produced from Les's Pride workshop this June. Prints will be minimum 20x30 inch in larger frames for auction.
All net proceeds of this Auction will go to the Aids committee of Toronto via the Snap 2009 group.

We feel this soup to nuts type of workshop with the goal to produce gallery quality work within a week will motivate students to think in a very clear manner when working on a series and by bringing in Teachers who have clearly demonstrated in their own photographic circles the abilitys to focus*pun* on their vision.
This all inclusive type of workshop has been in Les's and my minds for quite awhile and we the ability to photograph, edit/critique , print frame and then host a live show is invaluable.

Now the pain.

Fee is $800 Canadian, with a $100 Lab fee.
a non refundable deposit of $200 will confirm your spot, and you can pay down over the next few months to lessen the Blow. www.elevatorworkshops.com.
Bookings of accomodations is with Valerie and Shawn at The White Pines and then once full we will forward a second location.
We will not be providing food/refreshments as all accomodations are efficency with stove, fridge, washrooms bla bla bla.
Once a booking is made for the course we will send a email , confirming the spot and as well stuff needed to bring and such.

As stated above, this will be an very intensive workshop, but with the mandate of clearly explaining , lighting, exposure, development, editing, printing, framing and marketing of an exhibit.
We hope to see people from all points get together and learn and hopefully we can make this a yearly event.

sorry for the long rant.

Drew B. - only today can you get away with a comment like that (see Jason Brunner's post about going digital)

Bob: I am in; will register with Elevator in the usual course. Do you know if there are facilities and space for RV's? Or should I send a query to Valerie?

Valerie is ready for the phone calls and I think a RV hookup is ok.
Just mention the British and American invasion this fall.

WOW!! I so want to go!

Is there any chance, Bob, that you can post an informal itinery? I'd love to swing it this year but it may be a tad tough given that my sons will be 1 and 4. It's a bit long to leave them at home with my husband but if we all come it'd be chaotic.

Regarding the intinery, how early are the early shoots, and how late the afternoon ones? And the mid-afternoon lectures - will those be held back at where the cabins are? (the White Pines)

Having spent most of the past 12 months bouncing the ideas for this workshop around with Bob I'm so looking forward to being part of the invasion and making the concept work. Bob, Joe, Bill and Sandy are all photographers I greatly admire and feel priviledged to be working with in a location that will provide us with much in the way of quality photographic opportunity. Roll on October.

This is definitely a dream team workshop for me! I'd love to attend but it's really too early for me to tell if I can make then or not. I'm assuming there will be a limited number of places available? How many participants are you looking at?

Hi Folks

A quick update, a non refundabel $200 deposit paypal function is now up on www.elevatorworkshops.com , I would strongly suggest that as a deposit is put on paypal a booking with Valerie is done as well at her address in my last post.
We do anticipate this to be a full course with a very strong APUG contingent.
As deposits or signups happen , we will follow in due course with agendas , details, and what one should bring to the course.

thanks
Bob

Having worked with Bob and Kevin before, they spare nothing in their programs. You can bet this will be a very rich and intensive gathering and I wouldn't miss it for anything.

Have I said how excited about this workshop I am!

Yuck! After that little exchange, I think I would prefer to share a room with a guy who calls himself "The Banana"!

Update from Command Central.

We are now 15 booked with deposits for the course with 10 more indicating that they are in.

The Ratio right now is 2 - 1 women to men.
We expect that this will drop by the time of the event to equal representation.

For those considering joining, children and betterhalfs are more than welcome to attend. There are great hiking trails and facilities at White Pines and lots of stuff for the kids to do.
If there are enough children coming we will put together some programs for them with a bit of fishing, sports, point and shoots with Fuji cameras , hiking and games.
I have indicated that this will be a very comprehensive workshop , but there are some downtimes mid morning, mid afternoon and end of day campfires to toast some marsh mellows and hotdogs.. Hopefully Les can bring his quitar and play some tunes.

I am hoping that we can make this a real family event so that each participant can feel comfortable without leaving family behind.
The Motel as backup has efficiency suites that would be suited for small familys.

We are just finishing off a successful workshop with Ted Harris here right now and we will be marketing hard the Summer and October workshops very shortly and we hope to fill up soon.

Side note.

For both Les's Pride workshop - June and the Brit and Yank Invasion in Oct.
Elevator will be making very large prints and frames and we have located a 5 star Ballroom for a gala printshow action of all the work produced by the respective students and teachers. The printing material will be generously donated by Fuji and I am hoping Mr Galley will jump in and donate some of that good Harman Stuff.
Snap, who Elevator helps sponsor in their annual print competition will be helping us with marketing , auctioneering and panels for the Gala show.
They have a team of volunteers ready for such events and are really good at making it all happen.
All net proceeds of the Live auction and and a planned online international auction will given to the Snap Group which then in course donate all the proceeds to the Toronto Aids Committie for their very valuable and caring work.
