I had read about this book along the way, and it looked like something I'd be very interested in reading. Here is an article from around the time it was published, that explains it better than I could:

http://www.register-herald.com/news...cle_79f40dd0-ccee-5b5b-823e-59dd0f8a9f20.html

(Short version, in case that link ever goes away: these folks came into possession of the amazing collection of original Cirkut negatives from Rufus "Red" Ribble, who took panoramics of the mine workers in W Va, then added some of their own photos since they still do Cirkut photography, and published a big amazing book.)

If you try to find the book, the only sources seem to be ebay for $300, amazon.com for $500, silly stuff like that. But with a little archive.org work (because they took down their website at coalphotos.com) and google work I determined that the publisher is still in existence at the same address and phone number:

Gem Publications and Photography
269 Maplewood Lane
Beaver, WV 25813
304-256-8400

I called them up and they were happy to sell me a copy for the cover price of $60, plus shipping, using a credit card. It was well packed and arrived in perfect condition yesterday. I have not had a chance to sit down and read it, but a quick leaf through it has me excited. Might need a magnifying glass though. Unlike the impressive "America By The Yard" book, these folks went for quantity over sheer image size. It's a big book, but a pair of pages might have 2 or 3 photos on each side, rather than just one spread across them.

Just a handy tip for anyone else looking for this book - don't waste your money on the "rare book" scam artists!
