Textured paper inkjet

Hi, I'm trying to print on some old textured card I got in a hobby shop,
I printed a bit and they came out ok, But I had the printer profile set on plane paper, should I go for fine art museum or some thing else,
O, and some of my printer profiles are graded out ''the museum one for example''

Describe what you mean by 'textured'. Does it match any photographic purpose finish that you may have seen?

Thanks for the reply, It has a wobbly sand on beach kind of finish,but I just printed it with plane paper profile and it was good enough,
However I have just got my hands on a Harman sample pack, ''38 EURO'' ''FOR 15 SHEETS'' and I don't want to screw them up, Harman's site only has profiles for four papers, None for there canvas, Or textured papers, What do I do, id imagine canvas would come out very poor if the wrong profiles were used.

You didn't say which printer you use but you might try the Moab profile for their canvas surface paper. There are very many profiles available along with custom profiles. I have an Epson 3880 printer and have found their profile for luster surface to work well for the "F" grade (traditional dark room style) papers of different brands such as Innova, Ilford and Hahnamuhle.

Im using a canon pro 100, so a similar profile from an other brand would work, However when I'm in the quality and media drop down, the fine art papers are all greyed out, is that right,
The more answers I get, the more questions I have, Are there any good sites to learn about printing, there's loads of photo blogs and the like, but I can't really find any thing on printing,
I could go on and ask about what a custom profile is, how and why to make one, but you can see where this is going.

I'm not familiar with your Canon printer but the printer software is probably somewhat similar to Epson. There are most likely installed profiles and you can add others by going to the paper mfg's website and find the profile download section and follow their instructions . If you are using PhotoShop you should be able to go to the printer clicking on "print" then see "color handling" (or such). Under that it might say "printer manages profile" and have an arrow to scroll. It will then give you the option of "PhotoShop manages profile". That's what you want. It will have "printer profile" and you can find all your profiles to choose from. Experiment with your setup to find similar settings. You can use a profile other than those for your paper. There can be subtle differences from example one company's gloss etc to another gloss. You will have to decide what works best for you.

Thanks, Thats what I'm doing now, with my canon every day gloss that nether canons software or photoshop have an ''exact profile'' for gp-501 but it looks good to me using standard gloss settings, Im more worried about the more arty papers, The least harman could do is publish a profile for there paper after paying a premium, But I could only find profiles for some of there glossy papers. An other question, is it right that if i don't print any thing for 12 hours the printer dose what seems to be a 5min self clean, I don't unplug it or turn it off, But it seems to like to pumping ink out. '' I've had bad experiences with self cleaning before 100s of $$ being sponged away'' ''HOLY CRAP'' I've just checked and my ink has dropped to one third in a day, and i only printed a couple of pages, at this rate il spend as much on ink as the printed itself in a week.

All inkjet manufacturers make their money on ink, and small desktop printers with tiny cartridges will cost you the most. Go ahead and do the math -- the OEM ink for my small Epsons costs about $1300 USD per liter. And it gets better: printers without external waste tanks dump the ink from self-cleaning and nozzle checks onto an absorbent waste pad inside the printer. When the pad is calculated to be full, the printer quits working. The pads are not user replaceable.
You can add your own waste tank, and using 3rd party inks can save you a bundle, but there can be associated headaches. Pro printers have much larger tanks
(even the 17" Epson 38xx has 80ml cartridges), and I think the larger printers will allow you to control the frequency of self-cleaning or even turn it off. These will cost you thousands and you will need a larger house to hold the printer. Welcome to the world of inkjet printing

A couple of suggestions for you.

First, pick up a copy of "Fine Art Printing for Photographers", by Steinmueller & Gulbins. Everything you ever wanted to know about quality inkjet printing from profiles in the software through inks and papers. It continues to be a great reference source for me.

Next, move beyond having your pocket picked, and look at third party ink replacements. Precision Color has many highly rated replacement inks--and is well regarded in the online photographic community. Mike also produces a number of custom ICC profiles that match the ink, printer, and a significant number of papers together.

Thanks guys i thought the ''pro'' meant pro Third party ink it is then, I'l let you guys know if i find that software to stop the auto cleaning, i keep it in a cool room, so i think I'm safe enough.
and il have a look at that book.

I found the correct profiles on tharman's web site and used them to print, and I would of been better off selecting plane paper, it screwed the print up completely, it drowned the paper in green ink.
