[Not sure if that's the correct forum, feel free to move this post around]

Hi there,

I've bought Tetenal Antistatic Spray to clean / protect from dust optical enlarger parts, negatives and everything else. The label says: "Protect from static electricity metal, plastic, glass, films, foils and records", so must be film-safe.

My opinion of it is rather bad. It reeks of isopropyl alcohol, and though it doesn't (apparently) damage film, it leaves ugly smudges after drying, unless I scrub it immediately. Even then some smudges could be seen.

Am I doing something wrong, using the product in an incorrect way or is it good for window cleaning only?

Cheers,
A.

As far as film the best way I have found to protect from dust and other nasties from static is to use something like Tetenal mirosal 2000 anti static wetting agent in the final wash, or if using standard wetting agent is to add a drop or 2 of isopropyl alcohal to the final rinse, I have done so for over 50 years and it works for me

Do you have just a simple hand air blaster? It seems to always handle removing dust off negatives and my scanner for me without issues.

As far as film, with staining, streaks, smudges I'll swear by PecPad's and Pec-12 until it gives me issues

That Isopropanol will evaporate completely. It thus can have no effect on further static built. Primary static charge should be discharged by the final rinse, even plain water (as far as an external medium can do so anyway). Thus I do not see the point in adding Isopropanol.
