I never used one. It looks interesting but it would probably gather dust after I used it a few times.

I just looked up what it is -- looks like it does the same job as cutting narrow strips, but faster, and keeps all the test strips on a single sheet. Only works in one size (5x7 inch?), but it's just a little math to keep your exposure as you change magnification, and filtration won't change (whether you're using single filters or split grade) if the exposure doesn't.

Jobo got a "Test Printer", but that works with stepwedges and thus yields the respective results at different parts of the photograph.
Just last wek I wondered "why is there no commercial device that puts the same image detail at various exposures?"


Thank you Todd! I do not remember having seen such design proposed in publications over here.

A very similar to a device is detailed in the book, Beyond Monochrome. There are drawings and dimensions to make your own. I made one out of laser-cut acrylic. It looks nice and I never use it.

to make the same image, in several strips
is a very interesting tool, I use one more to give it a prehistoric, rustic maybe.
in my case when using split, without problem I can do with one filter and another and both on a single strip of paper, of the same image...
what comes next is to make and use

is useful, it is very comfortable since it is only a 5x7 paper strip, developing and passing it through the trays is easier.
It also allows you to play with filters and timing.
in my case the saving of paper and time is more than necessary... it helps a lot to the base copy and then finish the copy applying burnt and dodged,

I just realized that I got a commercial version in my collection.
It was made by Tetenal.

I is an oblong black plastic casing with a 25x90mm opening. Inside is a plastic drawer covered with a clear foil, under which an oblong piece of paper can be put. The drawer can be pulled out in steps, yielding 6 adjacent exposures of same image detail.

What you describe is what I'm really looking for, for me it's very useful, one of the reasons is that I make few impressions per month, so I'm not very affiliated with the experience, and I have to sustain myself with elements that contribute to the decision making,
each print needs different directions, in contrast and shielding... for me having about 10 loose strips in the tray, is not so practical... a single strip with the same image at different times and contrast is wonderful... simple and practical.
When you can send images from the test print... at least give me an idea and I'll see if I can make something similar.

The drawer has molded-in indents at its back and the cassette has molded-in a spring.
In a DIY version one could serrate one edge of the drawer and install a bulged leaf-spring at the inside of the cassette.
However the Tetenal approach with the spring at the flat side yields a smooth pulling operation, that might be disturbed a bit by edge serrations.

The top with the rectangular opening is used to make multiple exposures of the same area of an image by moving the paper between exposures. I just checked, but did not see that Tetenal test-strip printer listed in any of my Tetenal publications, going back to the 60's. By its design I assume it to be from the 60's/70's.
In 1980 however they offered a test printer for 4 images on a 9x12cm sheet.

Especially handy to figure out how long to burn, or if the negative has too much change in density from one side to the next. One has to adjust your timer for every exposure so that makes it harder to use, I made my own timer to automate that.

I have followed the model of the images 249587/88, and I have made some adjustments, tomorrow I will be sharing the prototype,
if you can share the timer model, for private,,
in my case I use an ilford 4x5 head, assembled on an omega column.

Finished model, 100% handmade.

The blade is taped on the left side and moves from right to left. Using the handle made of wood and moves to the mark of 2 and so to 7. The first one always eats ready to shoot. Attached are the images. I hope it's useful.

Having used the Ralph Lambrecht model now on many occasions the only modification which might on occasions be worthwhile is making the strip a little wider than one inch. Occasionally but only very occasionally, the one inch strip does not capture enough of the negative to get as many details as I'd like to make a decision but this is a very minor point

It is a point to improve ... previously had 2cm, change to 3 cm. the next step is to try ... I hope to give me time to perform these tests.
