Temporary lapse in common sense

Don't know what got the better of me, but today I pulled the trigger on an OM-3ti. I have several OM-1s and have always like them ( along with many other older cameras ). The OM-3ti is just one of those that has always captured my eye. The prices are crazy, especially when a mint 4t/ti is a little less than half the price. I guess we want what we want.

Look forward to getting and using it. It will be a nice addition to my collection.

Since I don't know much about the Olympus cameras, why is OM-3 series more that the OM-4 series?

There are a lot fewer of them around. The OM-3 never sold like the OM-4. My draw to it is that it is still all mechanical with a really nice multi spot meter built in ( OM-4 has the same spot meter but is electronically controlled and has an AE mode, the 4 can shoot 1/60 without batteries ). Need batteries for the meter but nothing else. The OM-4 might technically be a better camera, but I'm drawn to the 3.

I appreciate the information. Was the OM-3 sold a the same time as the OM-4, as a (mostly) fully-mechanical alternative, or did the OM-4 come later? I can certainly see the draw to the OM-3...the nice built-in meter, but the ability to go full-manual, if the batteries die. Sometimes, "technically better" isn't what attracts us.

I would say you have an abundance of common sense. Prices have come down quite a bit for the OM-3ti these 10 years like half price. A good time to buy one or two if you are a dedicated OM user with a large kit.

Wow- just looked them up on the ‘bay, my goodness. About 10 to 20 times more expensive than an OM-1, which I think is much the same camera without the sophisticated metering. My Oly collection with continue with the “3” as a gap. Congratulations on the acquisition!

I bought the OM-4 when it came out. The 3 was released at the same time and was far less popular because the 4’s AE mode made it super simple to use the multi spot metering.
Now of course the 3 is worth much more just because there are so few of them because of people like me who bought the 4 at the time!
In a way it reminds me of how today the Nikon F2 w/ the plain prism is worth more than the far superior F2as. (i have both..)
I wish I still had my OM4 but I was young, stupid and impressionable and fell for the marketing and paid reviews for the all new Minolta 7000i and traded it for that. Talk about regret!

I didn't quite get what you meant by "pulled the trigger" on a OM-3ti... At first I thought you meant you hated it so you shot it (I know you Americans like guns but... ) but now I see that meant you bought it. Excellent camera!

When my children became teenagers and learned logic, I told them that they had to use logic, think things through and be responsible for their actions, but when they became adults they not long had to use logic or common sense and just be like all the other adults. They still laugh about that.

I worked for a subsidiary of Raytheon, we had a great bunch of engineers who re-located to Iowa from Massachusetts. Brought a treasure trove of lab equipment. In the horde was a couple Olympus Titanium bodies and I swear just about every lens, macro doodads etc.
No one used this stuff, I am a Nikon guy, digital was just getting going. Someone figured sell this stuff and buy a new computer with the change
I directed them to KEH, I didn't expect much. Holy Cow, that stuff brought a couple thousand dollars, it was mint condition, heck You might be getting one of the bodies.
A couple months ago I got a urge for a quite ordinary, well preserved 1954 Leica IIIf, it's a beautiful thing

I only have the plain OM-3 . . . but it works perfectly. The most sophisticated metering system on a manual focus body!

In the mid 80's I had an OM-3 in my hands but was seduced by the OM-4 auto modes, I was a dunderhead for not buying the OM-3. OM-4's eat batteries because everything is electronic except a mechanical 1/60 setting. The OM-3 is fully mechanical and only requires batteries for the meter.

The OM-4 came out in 1984, and was replaced by the OM-4T/Ti in 1987.
The OM-3 preceded the OM-4 - it came out in 1983.
The OM-3 had a relatively long production run - it wasn't superseded by the OM-3T/Ti until 1995!
The primary differences between the earlier and later versions were:
1) the later versions offered titanium top and bottom plates; and
2) the later versions used less battery power, at least partially because the circuits shut off automatically when not in use.
There weren't many OM-3/3T/3Ti models sold, so they tend to be expensive.
My champagne OM-4T is a very nice camera

When I put mine on battery check it times out after 30 seconds. This is supposed to be the test to see if this is the new board that doesn't drain the battery excessively.

If it is an OM-4T/4Ti, it has the new board.
If it is an OM-4, it may have been made with the new board, or in a few cases may have been retro-fitted with the new board - that is where the test makes sense.
The OM-4T and OM-4Ti are the same camera, just badged for different markets.

That 35-80mm lens looks like the ideal walk around for this camera, maybe someday.

I did shot my roll of film and tried the various metering options, center weighted, multi-spot, highlight, shadow, all worked well. I will shoot two more rolls asap to stay out of trouble. First roll is FP4+ in df96 monobath ( new to me, so still experimenting ), I'll do another in XTOL which I have dialed in to my liking, and then something else.

yes- lapses in common sense can be fun, I'm about to have another that is not photo related.
