A little while ago, I bought a Technika III for a phenomenal price. I love everything about it except the recessed boards. Or rather; lack thereof. Finding them has proven difficult, though its a bit of a moot point anyways, as I'd like to use one with a somewhat deeper recess than the Linhof-made models (stamped satin-chromed alumnium).

My Technika was shipped with a board drilled for a Copal 3 (65mm approx.) and in its current state, I have no use for it. I was considering using this board to mount some sort of recessed component, like the type found on enlargers:

I've got two questions about this: Firstly, is it even feasible - why or why not? I'll mention that I do have access to a lot of metalworking equipment. Secondly, Which enlarger boards might be suitable to use for my application?

A couple of alternatives I've considered to the above: These sorts of extensions, but adapting them for using on my own board: http://www.ebay.com/itm/20mm-Copal-1-Extension-Lens-Board-For-Linhof-Wista-Chamonix-Shen-Hao-Tachihara/282359353465?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid=222007&algo=SIC.MBE&ao=2&asc=20131003132420&meid=84295e3e7612493698032cdce529aca0&pid=100005&rk=2&rkt=6&mehot=lo&sd=181047886359 Likewise, I've also considered buying a M65 helicoid, a retaining ring, and just using the lens on this board with helical focusing instead of the track. I have skinny hands  so getting my fingers inside the Technika body is less of an issue, and the replacement bellows came with a bag at the front, so I can do movements with the two standards very close together; surprisingly generous for say, a 75mm lens.

I realize this is a bit of a strange issue, though any help with it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Not a strange request, a very valid one.

I have a recessed lens on a Linhof Technika board, which is really a bit mickey mouse, but does give a bit of recess; really fiddly to work with.

The other board is a Technika type from China (I assume) which holds my 65mm Fujinon. It is recessed about 10-12mm. Without taking the lens out, it would be difficult to measure the depth.

Regardless, the depth is such that any deeper and I think you may run into some severe difficulty in operating the shutter mechanism, not to mention adjusting aperture and shutter speed, regardless of how slim your fingers are.

Attached are the two lenses as discussed.

Mick.

Since you have access to the tools, make a 65 blank & drill it for your needs.

By 65 blank I assume you mean the Tech III board with the stamped recess? I don't have access to professional stamping equipment (ie. a press) so I would be concerned with how accurate I could make the recess (with the recessed area perfectly perpendicular to the front of the plate - no accidental tilt) though I suppose its worth a try. I guess CNC is something to consider too. What I do have access to is aluminum welding, which is why I had assumed I could kit-bash a Tech III board and a recessed enlarger board.

Thanks for the pictures and information Mick, I appreciate it. Would you be able to tell me the exterior diameter of the recessed portion? I'm wondering if that might fit through a Technika III's front standard hole, or if it is too large for that.

The inside is interesting.

There are three measurements, the outer one is a small lip, this is 86mm in diameter and is a couple of mm proud of the back plate.

The start of the taper is 83mm while the deepest part of the taper is 81mm.

All measurements taken from the rear using a vernier caliper.

Do you have access to a 3D printer?
It may be a project or a learning experience. Or a frustrating learning experience.

Earlier I wasn't thinking of stamping anything but just making a disc to fit the threads on the board.
Once that's done it's easy to cut a smaller opening to mount whatever you like.
