Hi folks, just got my order from Freestyle with all my wet side processing goodies. One of the items I got is a Patterson Universal tank for 35/126/120 film. This is pretty much for single rolls of 120, either Pan-F in Rodinal or Techpan in Technidol.

So...I look at the bottom of the tank and notice that instead of the standard amounts of 8 oz. for a single roll of 35 and 16 oz. for 120, it asks for 10 oz and 17.5 oz!!! So I put the reel in set for 120 and sure enough, it needs a full 17.5 oz.

This kind of hoses the whole deal for why I bought it since Technidol comes in packets for 8 oz of solution. So now what? longer development times in a slightly dilute mix? Or do I have no choice but to add 1.1 oz more Technidol to the mix? I can't see wasting three packets of Technidol on a single roll of 120 Techpan, that is just silly..

I know, I could get a stainless steel tank and reel set, but the whole reason I went with the Patterson one is that for me, 120 is easier to load on it.

Any ideas?

Good Evening, PKM-25,

Technidol may still work for you when diluted beyond the Kodak recommendation. I routinely use a 10 oz. solution when processing night shots made on T-Max 100. I would stress that this is a very specific situation; I don't know what the result would be if processing Tech Pan in a more diluted solution, but since Tech Pan is not easily or cheaply available, that may be a moot point.

Perhaps making up a Technidol-like developer from scratch (Photographers Formulary ??) is a possibility. The simplest solution is just to go to SS; it doesn't take much practice before the loading becomes extremely easy.

Interesting, upon further reading of the instructions for Technidol, it says the following:

"To process one 120-size roll or two 135-36 rolls of film in the same process, prepare one pint ( 16 fluid-ounces [473 mL]) of developer by diluting the contents of two units of concentrate with enough water at 68 to 86 F to bring the solution volume to 16 fluid-ounces. ( 473 mL ). If you are using a plastic processing tank, dilute two units to make 20 fluidounces of solution."

So it recommends a higher dilution with no compensation in regards to development time....Hmmm...

I just went with the extra dilution and added about 40 seconds, perfecto!

By the way...this is my first 120 roll of Techpan, the negs look jaw dropping in 6x9!! It looks like it would take 150% of a drum scan to really pull all the detail out, insane!
