There are many books written about photography. Few thoroughly explain the science of silver halide photography. If you want to take your knowledge to the highest level I suggest these books. They cover the fundamental science of photography. These principles were well understood years ago so these books are remain accurate. The progress made in photography since that time has been in how to apply this the scientific knowledge while using improved materials.

Mees, The Theory of the Photographic Process 3rd edition 1966. This the bible of silver halide imaging. It covers the fundamental science of AgX imaging. There is no other book that explains AgX photography as thoroughly as this book. $20

Todd and Zakia, Photographic Sensitometry, The Study of Tone Reproduction, 1969. 312 pages. Easy to read explanation of all the factors that determine tone reproduction. $10

Evans, Hanson, and Brewer, Principles of Color Photography 1953. 708 pages. $15
The chapters are:
Response of the eye to light
Color specification and measurement
Visual processes in color photography
Response of photographic materials
Color response of photographic materials
Photographic formation of the color image
Color photographic systems
Types of dyes and colorants
Optical characteristics of colorants
Measurement of density
Color sensitometry
Analysis of color sensitive metric characteristics
Reproduction characteristics of a subtractive color process
Duplicating
Copying a color photograph
Color reproduction theory for additive photographic processes
Color reproduction theory for subtractive photographic processes

Shaw, Selected readings in Image Evaluation: Reprinted from Society of Photographic Science and Engineering 1958-1975 8.5 x 11 inches 506 pages. ...$10.
Comprehensive explanation of the technical aspects of image evaluation. Includes: MTF, Noise Analysis, Image Detection., Information Theory, and Psychophysical Attributes.

Evans, Eye, Film, and Camera in Color Photography ©1959 410 pages $10
From the book jacket: "What an observer sees when he looks at a scene can be and usually is very different from what he sees when he looks at an accurate color photograph of that scene. This book is the result of 20 years of continuing investigation by Mr. Evans into the differences and their various aspects. It shows what the differences are and how the photographer may either offset them or make use of them. As far as possible, all points are illustrated by photographs including pairs of pictures in which the effect is introduced in one and not in the other. This book enables the amateur to gain an understanding of the medium and the professional to learn why he follows many of the rule of thumb techniques he has been taught."

Evans, An Introduction to Color, A detailed Study of Color- its physical and psychophysical, and psychological aspects. ©1948, 340 pages. $5
An explanation of color by a photographic scientist. From the book jacket: "this is the first work to cover the combined effects of the properties of colored light, the properties of vision, and the action of the mind in interpreting color. Those who work with color must know the subject from all these angles, and furthermore must understand the entry relationships among these three aspects of color. Until now there has been no book which approach the study of color so broad viewpoint. To achieve his broad coverage the author divides this discussion into three sections physics, psychophysics, and psychology. In the first, he takes up with sources of light and the objects and substances that modify it. He deals with the evaluation of purely physical light by purely mechanical means in terms of the average observer. In discussing the psychology of color in the third section, the author considers the relationship between color is calculated for the standard observer in color as perceived by the mind.”

Neblette, Photography Its Materials and Processes 6th edition, 1962. 508 pages. $10.
Provides an explanation of the optics, AgX imaging materials, and processing of the materials. This is a complete explanation of AgX photography. Less detailed but easier to understand than Mees, Theory of the Photographic Process .
