Hi all,
A couple years ago, I got a job at a college here in the Bay Area where I'm basically responsible for keeping up the photo department, for both our digital lab and wet lab, digital cameras and film....
I thought it might be nice to compare notes with people in the greater Bay Area - teachers, lab managers etc. There are a lot of unique aspects to dealing with public labs, students, camera and darkroom maintenance and the like.
Anybody reading here teach at a university or college or maintaining a public darkroom or digital lab want to chat? Please let me know and maybe we can start a thread.
The kinds of things that I think we might benefit from collaboration that are unique to our jobs include:
Digital Lab:
Cost accounting for prints
Printer maintenance
Lab rules for students
Consumables- sources and best prices
Digital Camera checkouts, maintenance, reliability
Digital Negatives
Wet Lab & Film Cameras:
Large volume chemistry (5 gallon cubes, etc)
Fixer disposal
Use of alternative processes
Caffeinol
What cameras you offer and how durable they are
(etc)
And by the way, who still has wet darkrooms: There's Hayward Parks and Rec, San Francisco Harvey Milk, CCA (California College of the Arts and once had another "C" for Crafts), UC Berkeley (I used to print at Berkley Art Studio before I got this job,) Laney College? I'm sure there's more out there, let me know.
Best,
-Mike
