.....It can be very hard to acquire the taste of Vegemite. I think the reason it maintains popularity in OZ, is that people are fed it from a very young age. In fact my 10 month old son began eating it a couple of months ago mixed in with cream cheese on wholemeal bread !

The same holds true for marmite - it tends to be of those things kids get at a young age or not at all. Not sure I agree with you about acquiring the taste being hard - there are somethings I hated as a kid but love now, gentleman's relish for example.

Having tasted both Vegemite and Marmite :tongue: I can say that to many here in "the former colonies" feeding either concoction to youngsters would likely be considered a form of child abuse! :wink:

All kidding aside, an Aussie maiden in our office here in NYC held a little party on this past Australia Day featuring OZ food including Vegemite, of course, as well as Roaring Forties blue and a farily decent Shiraz.

As to the first - fortunately she did spread it thinly on an Arnott's cracker. As to the latter, it did help wash down the Vegemite. And as to the cheese - now that was VERY NICE indeed! :wink:

Mark, perhaps you misunderstood me. Acquiring a taste for certain foods is not necessarily hard, however in my understanding it is hard to acquire the taste for Vegemite. In fact I don't know anybody as an adult who has. I'm sure there must be, but you'll find more adults eat anchovies or Dijon Mustard than eat Vegemite.

My wife would agree with you regarding anchovies. But I keep trying to get her to try them.

That way I would not have so many half-eaten cans of them going "funky".

Besides, who in the US ever ate Calamari as a kid? Now it's the "boring appetizer" on every menu in America! :wink:

That depends on whether you are a masochist or not.

Many of the world's delicacies are considered to be acquired tastes.

If eating pufferfish (aka fugu) is an acquired taste then it may be the culinary analog of fatally hitting yourself on the head with a hammer (that is if the chef stuffs up)

HI!

Some time ago I was experimenting with a bunch of ancient ORWO roll films. Although film by itself was pretty cool for an oldie the licky-sticky tapes hadn't withstood the trial of time. I've never tasted Vegemite but I suppose it had to be similar to it with expiry date past twenty years ago.
When I tried it for the first time I thought I'll throw up into my camera's waist level finder.

After being married to my wife for about 10 years, who is from Germany, I found her one day eating vegemite on cracker biscuits. We've now been married for 20 years and she still has it on an irregular basis.

She is the first person I know, who has acquired the taste for vegemite as an adult.

When queried about why she had started to eat vegemite she replied, "that as I ate it so much, there must be something about it that was good".

So she and her Polish girlfriend tried it one day, the Polish friend didn't like it that much, apparently.

Apparently she had been earing it on the quiet, for about 2 years before I became aware!

Does Marmite count as well? I've never heard of it until a year or two ago, but fell in love with it, and now it's an occasional favorite on buttered toast with cheddar, or straight.
