Tamron Lens Question

A few days ago I took delivery of a 28-135 f/4-4.5 SP Adaptall 2 lens. I thought I knew almost everything about the Adaptall 2 lenses because I have many of them. This one came with a Canon FD mount adapter. The aperture mechanism works properly and the glass looks good. What's the problem? The zoom ring will not move up past the 80mm setting. I took off the mount adapter and put it on a different lens and it works properly. This 28-135 is not the only example I have. How can I get this one to go all the way to the 135mm setting?

Although I have different Adaptall zooms, I dont have that specific one. The nearest match I have is the 28-80 and never had something like your issue. I would say damage to the specific lens? Probably one of the aperture tab is bend?

The mount has nothing to do with the lens zooming. It's function is to connect the camera to the aperture -- and you said that works fine.

If the mount is OFF the lens or ON the lens, it should zoom through its range. If it does not, then it is defective. I've encountered lots of zoom lenses that only zoom through part of its range. I hope it's returnable.

I paid very little for the lens and since the Canon FD adapter works properly, I'm not too disappointed. Sometimes when you buy from a charity you get an item which is in excellent condition. At other times you may get a dud. There is only so much you can tell from the auction photos and most items are sold as-is. The funny think about the lens in question is that even though it will only zoom out to 80mm on the long end, it's not that much larger than the 28-80 SP.

Are you saying it won't zoom beyond 80mm when the FD adapter is mounted, but the lens not mounted on the camera? I wonder if the problem is due to the aperture not being constant as you zoom? Do you have another FD adapter you can try on this lens? Have you tried mounting the FD adapter on the lens when it is zoomed to 135mm?

I had an issue with one Adaptall lens and one FD Adapter, but the lens worked fine with another FD adapter I had. The "problem" FD adapter worked fine on a different Adaptall lens.

I've had problems with Adaptall mounts as well -- either because they were used/abused, or I attached it incorrectly. Some are easier to attach than other.

But the adapter has nothing to do with the zooming of the lens. Take the Adaptall mount OFF the lens and see if it zooms the full length. It should. If not, it's defective.

If you want to keep it, great. I've also ended up buying stuff that turned out to be inadequate for my purposes. In nearly every case, I've successfully sold them -- with a good description and photos -- and actually made a little money.

Yeah, been there done that. With all due respect, one person trash is another treasure. Been on both sides by now. Some people just need pristine things. Others are good (even pleased) with used/not fully functional/defective stuff.

Who knows, like xkaes says, you may even be able to sell it later. For the time being, just enjoy it, Tamron glass is pretty good.

Funny coincidence. I just got a Vivitar (Tokina) TX 28mm f2.5 lens for next to nothing because it was "defective". It turns out that the only problem was that the Vivitar TX-to-Minolta lens mount (very similar to Adaptall-2) had not been installed correctly.

I have a Tamron 70-210 that does this sometimes, gets stuck around 80mm. It needs wiggling of the zoom ring when you orientate the lens in different directions and that frees it up.
