tabulaRASA presents: Outlooks - no Kittens, No Kardashians - October 26, 2018 - January 3, 2019

A few of my photographic friends and I are today hanging a new show in the nearby community of Langley, BC.
It is in the display area in the Timms Community Centre - in the walkway between the Langley City Hall and the Langley City Library.
It will be open for viewing Monday through Saturday, 8:00 am to 9:00 pm and on Sundays, 8:00 a.m to 8:00 p.m.
There is an opening Artist reception scheduled for Thursday November 1, 2018 between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
I have a set of six photographs in the show. The other members are all creative and talented photographic artists with a wide variety of diverse approaches to their art - I'm looking forward to seeing all our work hanging together in the same space.

These are printed on a high quality inkjet printer using good paper.
The digital file has been re-sized for online sharing, and looks great in that format. That file is too big though for Photrio, so I had to re-size it further (by 50%) to show it here.

No wine - it is in a walkway between a city hall and a public library, adjacent to a community centre. We weren't looking to serve wine, and wouldn't have been likely to get a special occasion permit for that area, as it is and was full of kids.
The food - "nibblies" essentially - was very popular. Coffee and tea not so much.
It's hard to say what sort of crowd came for the reception, because the gallery area is a busy public space. I feel safe in saying that hundreds of people have walked through the area since the work went up, and every time I've been there lots of people seem to want to stop and examine more closely one or more of the photographs.

I do though have a question, is it possible to know just what 6.375" is in the real world?

Is it 6 and 15/64ths or something like that? Metric inches is something I just cannot seem to work out; and I grew up with inches and feet. I was trying to convert it to metric to get a handle on what size it was, converted to metric in my late 20's, have never looked back.

1/8 of an inch is 0.125 inches.
So 0.375 inches is 3/8 of an inch.
And 6.375 inches is 6 3/8 inch - and when you see that (6 3/8) on the screen you realize why one uses 6.375. For many screen fonts, the space between the "6" and the "3/8" isn't clear enough, especially in the small font that one uses for captions on a webpage.
If the frames and photographic paper and mats weren't sized in inches, I would have used centimetres.

Seems so simple now, but that really had me fooled as I've never seen metric inches written before. Or is that decimal inches, which is something I found when I was originally trying to understand things?

I think that it is, indeed, decimal inches.
And they really aren't necessary if dimensions are either hand written or typed on a (monospaced font) typewriter.

Isn't the USA the last place to be still using "inches" . I was raised in Britain on feet and inches, pounds shillings and pence (and farthings), and had to learn in adult life how to use millimeters and kilograms and decimal money. I can work in both but when I need to think creatively, for example when planning a fabrication project, my mind automatically reverts to feet and inches. I wonder how the worlds of international finance and measurement are coping with the double-standard that persists in thousand separators and decimal points? Those seem to me much harder to cope with than the coexistence of inches and millimeters.

It might be.
But as a result, those of us in Canada are essentially forced to live in both worlds. So much of the US influences our world.
I grew up at the time when Canada was trying to transition from non-metric to metric. All the US influence, combined with the old world holdovers, has meant that we still have a mix to deal with.
It drives me nuts when the meat department in the grocery store has the sale prices in Dollars per pound, but the label has the weight in kilograms!

I would have thought someone with your type of background, would have brought that kind of deceptive advertising to the attention of the authorities. Things like that were explicitly ooutlawed in the seventies, when Australia was converting to metric.

I too was brought up with inches, feet and miles, as well as LSD or pounds shillings and pence, we didn't have farthings, the smallest coin we had was the halfpenny, or Hai'penny, as it was usually pronounced.

I quickly learnt that using metric for any kind of building or fabrication project, was so much easier, quicker and more logical. I've really never looked back, one of the smartest things the government did.

It isn't really deceptive advertising, because as per the law the sign also has (in much smaller font) the before and after prices in dollars per 100 grams).
The part that irritates me is that, in catering to those who didn't want the change, the retailers ended up making the switch more difficult for everyone.
And the expectation of seeing prices the old way is just reinforced over and over.

Must have been gratifying! That some folks do stop to look is the big reward. Congratulations.

A frustrating update.
One of the photographs was stolen right off of the wall.
It was Richard Knotts' "Rain".
The Arts Council say that they have never had that happen before, and they have hung a lot of different exhibitions, in a lot of different venues.
The police are involved, and there is security camera footage.

I wish I lived closer than 3500 miles away !
That news is very sad if it make you feel any better
there is a place near us that used to have artwork on the walls
it was a artists bistro sort of place, and at one of the opening celebrations
someone stole artwork right off the wall.
