Hello,
I need to unscrew a lens from my shutter to mount a better lens.
While it was quite easy to unscrew the front part of the lens, it is impossible to me to unscrew the back.
Do I need some special tool?
There is some trick or tip I need to know?
Thanks
Trent

Oh, it is a Schneider Xenar 5.5/360 in a Compound shutter, #3 I guess.
Thank you

Yes, there are some tools that can help unscrew the back element, but please note that -even if the threads of the new lens fit the shutter, unless the shutter is designed specifically for that lens, the spacing between the elements on the front of the shutter and the elements on the back of the shutter will not be correct, thus resulting in a lens that will not perform correctly. In other words, for example, an Acme #3, is not just a universal Acme #3, as it was customized to the lens fitted to it, by the manufacturer.

I have several lenses in the same shutter but the glass will not interchange, due to different thread sizes, etc., but it is the same shutter.

I'm not familiar with that lens. Have you removed the shutter from the lensboard? A small strap wrench (from the hardware store) might work, or a spanner like SK Grimes sells.

I'm pretty certain that's a Compound #5, same as the 4.5/300 Xenar and the 5.6/360 Symmar. Be careful with that shutter, they don't make 'em like that anymore!

awww trent, you don't want that shutter anyway, I"ll take it off your hands.....

OK, I give up...
A friend just gave me his nice Heliar 1:4.5 210 to see if it fits any of my shutters, and the threads of the Compound are perfectly compatible. But probably Phototone is right: maybe this lens won't work properly in this shutter.

I should have read closer, and so should you: The TELE-Xenar 360mm f:5.5 is in a Compound #3, the plain Xenar 360mm f:5.6 was in a Compound #5.

And yes, a Heliar 210mm f:4.5 should be just fine in that shutter.
