Alright, I have an idea and I can't find any evidence of anyone else doing it or even thinking about it. I have an FE I got for parts, and it occurred to me I could maybe take its aperture coupling ring and transfer it to my FM2 so I can use pre-AI lenses on it. I know AI conversions are pretty affordable but it would be nice to be able to use them unmodified if I want. Also, the metal FE ring being more durable appeals to me.

Anyway, with so many parts across the FE/M/2/etc series being interchangeable, it stands to reason that the rings, while not being identical in of themselves, could have the same dimensions. So, what do you think? Could it be done?

The FE diaphragm ring won't work on an FM2. Although the rings look similar, they have different form factors and dimensions. And the connections to the meter system (the FRE assembly) are quite different on the cameras. The FRE is located under the rewind knob on the FE and it is located under the shutter speed dial on the FM2.
