Following the discussion on an ideal name for non-mainstream techniques initiated by AlternativePhotography.com, DAP (Dutch Alternative Photography) and AlternativePhotography.com are holding a survey to establish what you consider as non-mainstream photographic processes, what is the most suitable collective name for non-mainstream photography and what are the different types of user groups.
I'm still in favor of leaving Photography as Photography. It's well established and everybody knows what it means. I think we need to come up with new names for the "new imaging processes", since they are not photography in the traditional sense. I already have a name picked out. It's a four letter word . . . starts with "c" . . . rhythms with . . .
I don't recall ever reading a book or literature about photography that contained the term "Alternative Photography" either. I have a stinky feeling that was modern term made up to describe a traditional process, also. When you come up with a "new process" you should come up with a "new name" to distinguish it from established processes.
I did fill out the last one, but I quit halfway through this one because it wants me to pigeonhole myself. I'm not "primarily" one or the other kind of photographer, and I practice many of the various techniques listed.... and frankly what's in a name?? Shakespeare comes to mind....
