I believe it to be a cosmetic change only, the older style has film type reminders (barely) visible through the little window.
They’re nice cameras, not too heavy and with a decent viewfinder and good lens. The trick will be in finding a decent copy, some of the ones I’ve seen on the big auction site are described in somewhat fanciful terms, condition-wise!
Mine developed a sticky shutter, but not on the lens end, rather it was on the shutter button. It was pretty easy to clean and service. There is an exposure indicator, but there doesn’t seem to be any double exposure prevention mechanism (at least on mine). Film winding mechanism has been reliable.
