Super Angulon 38XL vs 47XL

Anyone out there used these lenses? I love wide angle lenses. I'm curious if the 38XL will actually cover 4x5. I know the literature says it won't, but experience says that Schneider is conservative on their numbers. Are the corners sharp enough at f/22? Is it too wide? Is that possible? How's the 47XL? Presently, the widest lens I'm using is 72mm on a 5x7, altho if I put my camera in a vise, I can get the 58mm on the 5x7. This, however, does not cover, but it is close and I don't have to crop much. What do you think? Any other wide angle crazies out there?

I doubt that it will cover 4x5. I would get a center filter and make exciting round images with the lens.

I'm more than willing to try one and find out! Been looking for one (38mm SA XL) at a ridiculously low price for some time...

My 47mm Anulon experience is not with an XL model, but the one mounted in my Veriwide. It covers the 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 (6mmx10mm) format well, with slight fall off at the corners occasionally. I really doubt it would cover 4x5 at infinity, but would cover for macro work.

I use a Polaroid MP4 shutter and lens set (17,35,50,75,105,135mm) on a Deardorff 8x10 in 8x10, 5x7, and 4x5 formats for macro and they work quite well. They are made by Tominon in Japan. Much less expensive than the Zeiss Luminars, but I only contact the 8x10 and 5x7, so I'm really not gonna see much difference.

I use the 47 Xl and I love it. It is an artpiece in its on in lensmanufacturing. Not much shift cap. only 1 cm but for shifting you have to use the CF!
I have the 55mm APO Grandagon also but if I could only have one the 47 XL would be it!

To my knowledge the 38 xl max's out @6x12 and the 47 xl will cover 4x5 with next to no room for movement.

I have the 58 xl and will, eventually get the 38 xl and a 6x12 RFH to go along with my 6x9. If I wasn't going with a RFH I would have passed on the 58 xl and bought the 47 xl.

I didn't buy the center filter and really regret it. If you are shooting neg's it isn't a show stopper, but would be with chromes. David Goldfarb has stated in a different thread that a CF not only helps with fall off, but also improves contrast
