I have a good bit of experience with WordPress from running an unrelated site, and was wondering if any of you had any recommendations for a template for a WordPress photo site. There are so many templates available it is hard to know where to start. I prefer a clean, minimalist look, and would prefer a template that has a history of support. I've gone through the experience of WordPress updating its software and breaking templates that the developer no longer maintains. Thanks in advance.

I'm not using WP for my template, but I have had success with templates from the Envato Market website which provides a lot of product for design. Their specific website products link is: Dead Link Removed

I've been impressed with the support for the HTML templates I've purchased (and graphic design products), but cannot comment on support for WP.

With the ability to view demos online the only problem is choosing which one really suits your needs best.

I'm using Dead Link Removed and support has been good so far. There's even a few youtube videos that takes you through the steps of creating a gallery. However, I wouldn't call it minimalist and you may find it too busy. Personally, I often find the minimalist white designs too sterile and a bit boring but that's just me. I guess, I need something more lively to jazz up my boring photos. :whistling:

Folks, there is no such thing as a free lunch. WordPress is no exception.

I used them briefly some time ago, and while I readily acknowledge that no web site in existence today (or especially a free site) is in any way even near to perfect, I had such problems with their lack of support and near-total disinterest by their so-called "customer service" staff for their freeby options, that I gave up and finally paid up - to another site. Friends who use WordPress say their client service for the paid options is good - not very good, not even pretty good, but just good - but I was given a much better deal by another site, and I walked.

Web sites are relatively inexpensive for what they offer. As ozphoto noted, we now have so much choice, as a little OL research shows, that the ultimate final decision can easily become a problem in itself. A first world problem!

ozmoose, I think you're mixing up wordpress as content management system (CMS) software and the web hosting provider wordpress.com that of course uses the wordpress CMS software. The wordpress CMS software can be downloaded for free from wordpress.org and can be used with any web hosting provider. Many web hosting providers have scripts like Softaculous that will install and configure wordpress CMS on your website.

What do you want out of the site?

There are solutions out there that are better than Wordpress and are simple to use. I have been playing with Koken for the last few years for showing newer groups of images when I want to. Might just update my simple HTML website to it when I finally update it (same for 10 years now!) It is pretty good. Load it onto your server, pick a theme (some are free) and go. You can also customize it if you want and they have plugins if you want to get complicated, like sell things. Best thing is photographs look amazing on the software. They even have a Lightroom plugin so you can update it straight from Lightroom.

Staying on top of Wordpress is a pain if you ask me.

Spijker, I understand the differences between the two. My problems were not with an ISP, but with Wordpress itself, specifically their less than adequate CS at the time, which was for the free site. All this was some years ago and CS may have improved by now. I truly hope it has.

I am not the most technically minded person and many seemingly simple tasks in setting up the damn thing were beyond me. I send the Wordpress CS two carefully written emails in which I tried to explain my problems as clearly as I could. Their responses, after some delays, were pleasant and polite but vague, and reflected a "well, it's free, you should move up to a paid site" attitude. Fair enough, I thought. Possibly I was expecting too much for a free site. Ours is after all a capitalist system based on profits and the dollar rules. The free lunch philosophy applies.

Unhappy with what I had, I reconsidered my options, found a new provider and moved on, initially to a free basic site and eventually to a paid site with the new ISP. CS for both was excellent. I ran the second site for several years but no longer have it, for reasons not really relevant to this discussion.

Other than mentioning Wordpress which is the subject of this thread, I prefer to leave names out of my thread. There are many site providers and with a little online research one can easily find oneto suit most requirements. Bearing in mind that free is free, and champagne tastes on beer budgets are not really compatible.

I agree with Patrick Robert James that maintaining Wordpress was (and may still be) a right royal pain. Perhaps all such sites are. As a practicing architect, I very quickly determined that for my own requirements the best option was to cough up the bucks and move up to my own site, professionally set up and maintained, and did so. Oddly, thanks to good insider connections in the profession and the assistance of a programmer friend who understands visual design, this cost me far less than I had expected.

I have run a WordPress site on an independent ISP for going on eight years and am comfortable maintaining it. Given that there are thousands of templates, I was just looking for a few recommendations so I didn't have to wade through them to find a capable one.

Thanks Spijker for the heads up on Photolux. I'll give it a look.

I have been on Wordpress for several years as well. No doubt there are better alternatives, but my site is stable and I don't have any problems with it. My template is "portfolio-press". YMMV, but at least this is a direct answer to your question.
