Very sad news.

Sue did an enormous amount for photography in the UK.

In the early 1980s, if you wanted to learn about contemporary photography around the world, the only enlightening sources were Creative Camera magazine and The Photographers' Gallery which was an absolute oasis in the photographic desert that was London at the time.

I used to go every weekend to see the exhibitions and browse the bookshop which was then run by Clare De Rouen. She introduced me to many amazing photographers work that I had never heard of and who remain firm favourites to this day.

David.

The Photographer's Gallery was usually my last stop on London trips. Somewhere to decompress before the trip home - and I often left carrying a few new books.

Being surrounded by a set of work is very different than taking in one image at a time. The atmosphere of the gallery makes quite a difference.

I started taking photographs in 1982, so visits to the Photographers Gallery were an important part of my early education, including seeing 'Blast Furnace' by Ian Macdonald in 1986.

I do not recall hearing her name ... no reason i would have... until i took a photo class, about 5 years ago.
My teacher started each five hour class with a 20-30 minute slide show.
One day the lecture was about Sue Davies.
Man.!...... she was a BIG Deal. It was fascinating to learn about who she was and what she Did/Accomplished.
Good For Her and her impact on photography.
