Ok, so I was approved (because of honor student status) to use 120 film and a 645 camera for my photo classes. Problem is, someone at the University of Memphis has apparently disappeared with all of the 645 Negative Carriers. I have looked online and found them to be quite expensive (70.00 used). Does anyone know of an inexpensive source for one or maybe even have one lying around they no longer use? The enlargers we have at the college are Omega and we use glassless sandwich carriers. Any help would be appreciated as right now I am using two pieces of foamcore with taped edges and getting some really gnarly light falloff when I am printing.

Thanks.

Make one out of mat board -- thinner than the foam core -- you can even bevel the edges to reduce blocking part of the image.

Vaughn's is a very good idea if you can't shell out the money.
I seen one made for a pano from a Holga made of of scrap black matboard and gaffers tape.

Are there any 6x6 carriers? If so, mask one off with some black tape. What model Omega, I'll keep my eyes open for you.
Rick

That might be an idea about masking off a 6X6, we have 6X6 and 6X7, but as the lab monitor said, not many use 645 because there are so many cheap 67 cameras on the market. I think the enlarger is a D5.

Check eBay. You can find plenty of Omega D carriers, both the rectangular kind and the round Rapid Shift carriers. My own preference is for the Rapid Shift carriers with glass inserts. If you can't find 645, look for a 6x6, 6x7, or 6x9 glass carrier and make a mask out of black paper.

Here's a beautiful 6x6 glass carrier--

Here's a set of 5 carriers, glassless I think, with a BIN lower than the price you've quoted for one--

Here's a pile of crap that someone should just throw into the garbage--

Here's a real 645 carrier--

Sorry, was posting from my ipod in a moment of frustration while at the University, I am usually much more wordy.. as you can tell from this reply.

FYI, I was trying to bid on the one you linked to, but they are PayPal only... looks like I am going to have to bite the bullet and set up an account.

Email the seller and askif they will accept a postal money order. I do it all the time, and 99% of them will take it.

8ply matboard works great as a negative carrier.
much cheaper than a metal one and faster to make
than waiting a week for your check to clear and
item to ship by slow boat to you ...

I may be able to help you... Do you know if your enlarger (anyone?) is compatible with the Omega B600?
I'd love to help out as this site gives so much to me.

write me directly.

The Omega B600 (medium format) uses different neg carriers from the D-series (4x5") enlargers.

All eBay sellers are required now to offer PayPal and essentially not to advertise other forms of payment they may accept, as I understand it, so they pretty much all look like PayPal only, but you can always ask if they would accept another form of payment.

Thanks David......

I've found that if I write a seller on eBay and ask them to accept a check and Money order and I'll wait for it to clear they are willing. I will NEVER go back to paypal.

Why not use the 6x6 carrier? Your situation is no different than someone using 6x6 and cropping to a rectangle.

Light falloff might be related to wrong lens, condensers or mixing box.

When I go back into the lab tomorrow, I am going to grab a 6X6 and try it. I think the metal is about the thickness of mat board, so I might can put a piece in the 1.5cm gap and put gaffers tape on both sides. Then I will put my name on it and hide it so none of the digital jockeys that are taking darkroom photography for kicks decide to dismantle it.

BTW, certainly not a stupid question.

I forgot to add this last night-- 1: There are no stupid questions, and
2: the only stupid question is the one you dont ask.

Are you sure you can't make a payment to a PP user with a credit card?
The reason I have a PP account is so people can use MC/Visa etc. to make payment.

Making your own lens boards also allows one to print he entire negative...

You can make a PP payment via a CC if the PP acount is a "Business" account. I choose not to even use a Credit Card going thru Paypal. YUK on PP.

I was in the same situation when I got my D5 a while back.
I used a 6x7 carrier with a mask to do 645 for a while.
I eventually found a 645 carrier for around $25 on the auction site.
I just looked on KEH and they have a LN one listed for $31.

Do one or more of the D5s have the Omega masking accessory? If so, you can use the 6x6 carriers and just adjust the mask to cut down on the extraneous light.

Here is an image of what I am referring to:
