studio shooting reflective jewelry.

Hi guys, I have tried to shoot jewelry in a studio environment with little success, I want consistent clear looking images, If any one has experience or suggestions on how to get a professional look I would much appreciate it, Problem is some of the items have large silvery dome arias to then ''il post pics later'' Which act as a prefect reflector to what ever is around them, ''lights'' ''diffusers'' ''cameras'' a lot of my shots look quite bland because the shine is reflecting the colour of the white paper I use as a diffuser and background which makes the metal look white instead of sparkle silver.

I don't know what people do now, but 40+ years ago, before things like light tents, we used normal lights and Krylon Dulling Spray on the metal. That way you get the effect of hard lights without the glare. The spray is still made. That may not be exactly what you're after, though.

have you tried placing your subject in a cardboard box lined with black construction paper? works great with glass and can try other colors

Thanks, The dulling spray sounds interesting, I have one of them light boxes off eBay, it works ok but doesn't quite give me the look I'm after, The best results i have gotten were with a reflected flash, so I'm going to concentrate on making reflectors and more diffusers,

You might try to make a larger tent (than the bay size) using some paper or fabric (translucent without wrinkles) stretched to make scrims that you can move lights around behind them and beside them to give soft highlights and shadows. If the jewelry is reflecting anything other than the softly lighted scrims the result you see will be black areas on the metal (if it's metal jewelry). You seem to be going in a good direction so I hope this helps.

Hide the camera with a small hole in the scrim in front for the lens opening. It will see the hole but it will be minimized.
