If I am going to replace the cover off a beat up Hasselblad A12 black back, is there anyway to "strip" off the black paint to make it a chrome back?

An automotive stripper would work great. Bondo/MarHyde (now 3M) makes a paint stripper that you can brush on called Tal-Strip.

Whether it is as thick a layer as on chrome magazines, i don;t know.
But every owner of black Hasselblad magazines can tell you that there is pretty shiny stuff below the flaking black paint.

ymc,
Let us know how this project turns out. I also have a shabby looking black A12 that could use a facelift.

The ones I have seen with most of their black paint off did not have chrome underneath, the had a dark gray metal.

The dark grey metal is beneath the chrome. So maybe they chrome flaked off on the magazines you have seen?
The black magazines wear down to a nice shine.
