Street Photography Magazine?

Has anyone else been approached by the fledgling "Street Photography Magazine"? http://streetphotographymagazine.com/

I received the following today on my website feedback:

I suppose I might feel flattered, except that there is very little on my website that could be even loosely identified with street photography. Am I just being spammed/scammed?

My name is Vinay Panicker and I am representing a new street photography magazine called STREET PHOTOGRAPHY MAGAZINE that is due to be launch in March on the Apple iTunes Newsstand.

E-zine.. how unthrilling... Great idea with a street photo mag, but digital???

Looks like he's seeking free content. Could be a nice opp, but I'm not sure if it would translate to sales. I'm assuming he'll try to sell subscriptions via the App Store and you'll most likely not see any of the profit.

You could always just ask him what it pays and give him your rate. Lead with the assumption that it's a paying gig. If he's looking for free content you'll find out right away, or never hear from him again. I can see why he'd want to feature some of your photos, standing alone they are very good examples of street style, especially that wonderful shot of the skaters. Looking at your whole body of work makes it obvious that you're not a typical street guy, but those few images stand on their own very well.

Thanks, guys. (and thanks for the comments on my photos... you can see why I am a little unsure that my work even fits the purposes of this magazine)
Having never published in a paid mag, I have no idea what "my rate" is, but I have a feeling that the "pay" is the fame and exposure they are offering.
I will sleep on this, but I'm starting to think that the answer is going to be no. I'm not desperate for exposure, and I doubt that their market and mine are two quite different audiences.

Yeah, I got it too. If he's charging for the app and/or taking paid advertising I'm out. I've been approached a few times similar to this and the offer of "exposure" in exchange for my work to them for free so they can make money is ludicrous.

The cover picture, the general design and article titles 'FLICKR SHOOTER OF THE MONTH' and 'COMPOSE LIKE A MASTER', I would of thought, are the deal breakers. The guy is probably 17.
But still, what have you got to lose exactly!? If it's an iPad mag, you don't really have to send images much bigger than the average web portfolio size. Just think of it like posting to another web gallery.
Unlike digital images, when you have the negative, it's not difficult to prove you own the image if anything does happen.

There are many way to market your work. Unless you are of such high standing that you can demand payment, free marketing can bring you customers who pay for you work. Don't be too quick to dismiss the opportunity.
