Streaks from Rodinal Stand on Tri-X

I have some streaks on my negs at the top edge -see scanned image. I don't think it's light leakage as it does not happen with FP4 or Silvermax. My process is as follows:

Wash negatives in Paterson tank
Put in Rodinal at 100:1 dilution - Tank calls for 375 mls for one spool so 3.75 mls Rodinal added
Tank has two spools to prevent the lower one with the film riding up during agitation
Chemicals at 20.C
Agitate for first minute
Stand for 59 minutes
Stop bath
Fix for 5 minutes agitating every minute
Wash 10 minutes

Any clues about causes would be very gratefully received. I have used this process without getting theses streaks for several months. I wonder whether it is bromide drag?

You'll almost certainly find that they match the sprocket holes, and in my experience it's caused by insufficient agitation. You should stick to no more than 5 minutes between agitation cycles if you must use a reduced agitation regime. At 1+100 Rodinal essentially has stopped developing after about 20 minutes, so there's little point in leaving it for longer.

Agree with Lachlan. Stand development discussion on the forums has increased lately, and it needs to be clear that long periods of time without agitation generally result in marks (streaks, bromine drag, etc.). The 5 minute guideline given above is a good one that I also use.

Stand development is very difficult to get right and any mistakes usually result in uneven development.

Perhaps a more pressing question is why did you use stand development for an image taken on a rainy day in Berlin? - what were you hoping to achieve?

Thanks David. It was a very mixed 35mm film with some images with very high contrast taken on a different day and others very flat like the image included here. But I take your point.

the famed stand development streaks, no surprises there. sorry it happened, but it happens often with stand development.

I now do semi stands.

Flip at halfway point, also I stopped putting a second reel inside the tank and that cut back streaking drastically.

I abandoned so-called "stand development" years ago as a viable technique for roll film processing because streaks, bromide drag and over-development on the bottom edges of the roll made it impossible to get reliable results. I've found Ilford films in 8x10 sheet size work well with stand development for certain scenarios, but roll film is almost always compromised somehow, so I don't recommend it.

There are two kinds of people who do stand develop roll films. Those who have had problems, and those that are going to have problems.

There is a reason why you will never find a great photographer swear by stand development. Lots of internet know it alls will insist they are right though.

I don't use it as a standard but I do use it when I have unknown film or film I don't care much about. It has it's uses and it's another tool in a photographers tool box.

I've used it on rolls where I've done a variable ISO. One roll of Ultrafine 400 and I messed with under and over exposing then developed stand in Rodinal.

It gave good enough results.
