I recently bought a Canon AE-1 and as a gift the man i bought it from threw in a few items for me to use. I was pretty happy about the Hoya filters he gave me
Then I came across a strange shutter release cable(or at least its what I think it is.)
Now, I'm a Canon user when it comes to the Nikon - Canon fight, and this cable says Nikon on it.

Is this a normal cable for a Nikon user or is it something strange?
Thanks!
-Lynette

Oh and please excuse the terrible photo quality, iPhone cameras are terrible.

Well I have no idea, but I think I have seen something like this for the old Leica cameras and Nikon and Canon made copies so my guess would be it is for one of those :D

The photos were taken too close and the detail in the wood is fine but somewhat lacking in the bit we need to see clearly.
It looks similar to the cable release made for Leica but I think it's actually too small in diameter for that.
My Nikormat FTn has a shutter button that will accept either a "normal" pin type cable release but there's also a threaded collar around the shutter button which would allow a "socket" type release to be fitted. The socket would still need to have a "pin" in the centre but my guess is that what you have is this type of cable (which may have been used on several models around that period - not just Nikon).

This is a Leica type cable release it fits the Nikon F, F2, Nikkormat and the Yashica TLR cameras, it won't work on your Canon AE1
you need to buy a Compur type threaded one (they have a tapered thread that screws into the shutter release button) that any camera store should sell.

Its called a"Leica nipple" most can be unscrewed from the cable release. Nikon also used them for a while, and it is needed for Yashica TLR's. If it cant be unscrewed from the cable, I'll be glad to take it off your hands.

I used to have one, the Nikon one can't be unscrewed, maybe you could do a trade with her.

So does this work by having a big "plunger" push down the entire shutter button? I have a Nikon FM and have noticed the threaded collar that Leigh was talking about around it.

That's right, and as Nicholas writes they are of very good quality.
