Hi! I developed outdated Foma 35mm film, ISO 400 and I got strange marks on film (images below). I developed it in HC-110, dilution B. I'm really curious what is going on and I hope that you can help. Have you seen smth like that before? Images are from two films; first two from first and the other two from another.

Never seen such kind of marks, and I never had any "manufacturing defects" problem with Foma 100 or 400 film.

Never seen anything like this on Foma or any other film, and Foma is the main film I use, use it for everything, 400 and 200, hope someone will be able to help
Thank you R.Gould.

double exposure of picasso's sketch pad?

hard to say -- you say it was old film -- you didn't forget to dust the enlarger by any chance, did you?

toss the rest of the batch and buy new stuff. make sure your chemicals are clean.

These are scans and it's on film, on emulsion. I'm just wondering where I got that pattern. Was it already manufacturing defects or because of wrong storage or did it happen in developing process...

Could it be fungus on the backing paper?

It doesn't look like any of the commoner processing or handling issues which we see occasionally, e.g. air bubbles, scratches, etc. My own guess would be bad storage and/or the age of the film (how outdated was it?).....maybe damp, condensation, or fungus.

If you can, I'd try a fresh-dated roll of the same film using the same (fresh batch) processing chemicals and method.....I'll bet it will be just fine.

Send a sample to Foma and ask them for comment.

Something as weird as this isn't (easily) going to get diagnosed by posting scans on APUG.

[sits back, waits for PE or someone to diagnose exactly what problem is ...]

I developed also other films (another brands) and they were just fine.. Well, I guess it could be storage - when I got it, it was already outdated, I don't know year, there were no box.. Thanx for an answer.

Looks like it got humid during storage and maybe a fungus started growing on the emulsion where it touched the base or it ferrotyped the emulsion a bit, changing the permeability of the gelatin.

Hi Kino. Thank you for an answer. It was in refrigerator, it could be some moisture, since it's just ordinary fridge. Can fungus infect also other films?

Gelatin is a great medium for growing all sort of stuff, but unless the roll was furry, I wouldn't worry about it. Time, temperature and humidity are your worst enemies...

Manufacturing problem...
If it was manufacturing problem I woud certainly have seen it, I never use anything else for last 15 years, if it was kept in a fridge then was it bought to room temp before use? also, if it was in the fridge for a while before use then it could be damp or fungul infection of some kind, how outdated was it? could be bad storage for a while before you even got it, could be so many things that we could guess all day and never get the answers, To get a fair answer form Foma, or any other manufactur then they need to see the film, not just a few negatives but the complete film, also, was this on every negative or just some, there are so many variables that diagnoseing on a forum is almost impossible,

I think it's a paranormal event!
Auntie Mable as decided to send a message from the other side...

Yes, we should install a "paranormal" forum to which all artefacts-threads automatically will be moved if not thoroughly explained within a certain time...

There is a thread here with exactly that same problem. IDK if it was Foma film. It is very strange.

Well, having a close look at the negs, you have a horizontal scratch on all of them, approximately in the middle. It is more evident on the two brighter pics, but seems to affect all.

With all the other "stuff" present there, it is difficult to identify, especially at distance. My guess would be static electricity, or bacteria, or maybe condensation of humidity during storage? Or maybe the film was just too old ...

was your developer stored in a cold place? Looks like some part of the developer crystallized and got stock to the film during development.
Heating up the developer to 20 degrees isn't enough. It takes quite a bit of stirring for me to get D76 or Xtol fully dissolved after storage in the winter.
